Joseph Horton was the son of Barnabas Horton and Anne Smith.
He married Jane Budd, daughter of Lieut John Budd of Southold and Rye NY.
Jacqueline Dinan, in her book In Search of Barnabas Horton, lists the following children for Joseph Horton and Jane Budd:
- John, born ca. 1648 and died before 4 August 1707; married Rachel Hoit
- Joseph, born ca. 1648-1650; his death date is unknown
- Samuel, born ca, 1652-1656
- David, born ca. 1654-1660 and died after 1733
- Benjamin, first appeared in Westchester County records in January 1699/1700 (Note: The Benjamin Horton, jr. who married Anne Budd in the late 1680's does not appear on the 1698 Southold Census. They may have moved to Rye.)
- Hannah, married (1) Thomas Robinson and (2) Miles Oakley

Joseph was born in 1625 in Mowsley, Leicestershire, England.2 Joseph married Jane Budde, daughter of Lieutenant Johne Budd and Catheryne Butcher, circa 1647 in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.3,4 About 1664, The family moved from Southold, Long Island to Rye, Westchester County where Jane's father & some of her siblings had gone.5 Joseph's wife, Jane, died circa 1667 in Rye, Westchester County, New York, leaving him a widower. Joseph married 2nd Abigail Vail, daughter of Jeremiah Vail and Catharine (?), in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. Abigail may have been Joseph's second wife. About 1685, the family resided in Rye, Westchester County, New York but returned later to Southold. Their son Joseph married Mary Hallock and son John married Sarah Vail. Joseph departed this life before 1696 in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
Joseph owed 11 parcels of land in Southold in 1653. Prior to 1665 was resident of Rye NY, which was in the jurisdiction of Connecticut.
Joseph was a confirmed Lieutenant of the train-band of Rye in 1667 and chosen commissioner for Rye in 1681-1683.

Joseph Horton came to America with his father Barnabas. They first went to Massachusetts and then to Southold on the tip of Long Island. Joseph and his wife Jane moved to Rye, NY where Joseph became a prominent citizen.
Joseph came to America with his father. He resided near his father in Southold for several years after his marriage but about 1664 he moved to Rye, Westchester Co. NY to which place his father-in-law, John Budd had previously gone. In 1671 he was chosen one of the Selectmen of Rye, and about this time he is one of a Committe of three to procure a minister. In 1678 he was a Justice of Peace and also a LT, and then a Capt of a Militia Co. In 1695 he was chosen one of the vestrymen of the church, and in 1699 he was licensed to keep a public house of entertainment.
