Mary Simmons was the daughter of Moses Simmons and his wife, Sarah. Mary Simmons married Joseph Alden about 1660. He was the son of John Alden, who came on the Mayflower and Priscilla, his wife. The Simmons were parents of seven children - Sarah, Isaac, Joseph, Mercy, Hopestill, Elizabeth, and John. Some sources assign an eighth child to this marriage, Mary Alden. So far, no contemporary seventeenth or eighteenth century sources have been cited for a child name Mary being born to these parents.

The family lived first at Duxbury, and then removed to Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Mary Simmons Alden outlived her husband, who died February 8, 1697. She was made co-executer of his estate on March 10, 1697, so was still alive on that date.

Her great grandfather was JAMES CHILTON, the eldest passenger of the Mayflowers. His daughter, and Mary's grandmother was Isabell CHILTON CHANDLER (dau. of James CHILTON), who daughter was Sarah CHANDLER SIMMONS (m. Moses SIMMONS), who had Mary SIMMONS ALDEN. Her great aunt was MARY CHILTON (m. Edward WINSLOW), 1st woman to set foot upon PLYMOUTH ROCK.*Source: The Register of the Lynn Historical Society, Lynn, MA, 1906; geni dot com; coltechpub.com/hartgen/htm/chilton.htm. The lineage: Richard, Lyonel/Isabel FURNER,to James, to Isabel/Mary, etc, then from Isabel Chilton Chandler to Sarah Simmons to her dau. Mary Simmons Alden. Info from this family site:1. Richard Chilton - born in 1505 in St. Paul's Parish, Canterbury, Kent, Eng; died 30 Nov 1549 in St. Paul's Parish, Canterbury, Kent, Eng; buried on 30 Nov 1549 in St. Martin's Churchyard, Canterbury, Kent, Eng. Richard married Isabell about 1528/1529 in Kent, Eng. Isabell; she was born about 1509 in St. Pauls Parish, Canterbury, Kent, Eng. & died Sep 1540 in St. Paul's Parish, Canterbury, Kent, England; buried Sep 1540 in St. Martin's Churchyard, Canterbury, Kent, Eng. Of Richard - in a will dated and proved in 1549, his deceased wife Isabell, is bequeathed the bulk of his estate to his son Lyonell. (Sources: - 1)Children:i. Lyonell Chilton: born about 1526/1531 in St. Paul's, Canterbury, Kent, Eng and died on 15/4 Jan 1582/1583 in Canterbury, Kent, Eng .

Second Generation ---2. Lyonell Chilton - aka Lionel - was born about 1526/1531 in St. Paul's, Canterbury, Kent, Eng and died on 15/4 Jan 1582/1583 in Canterbury, Kent, Eng . He was the son of Richard Chilton. Lyonell married Edith about 1557 in Canterbury, Kent, Eng. The information on Lyonell marrying a second time, Isabel Furner, suggests Edith may have died 1557-1559. Lyonell married Isabell Furner in 1559 in Canterbury, Kent, England. Isabell was born about 1545 in St. Paul's Parish Canterbury, Kent, England. She died in St. Paul's Canterbury, Kent, England and was buried in St. Paul's Canterbury, Kent, England. Lyonell's marriage to his first wife Edith on 30 May 1547 or 1557, shows 5 children: James, John, Alice, Anne and Margaret. b. Abt 1556- Abt 1560 as an approximation, assuming James is reported to be with the second wife, Isabel, the first four children may have been with the first wife, Edith. "The will of Lyonell "Chylton", a yeoman of considerable property residing in St, Paul's Parish, dated 7 Sept. 1582 and proved 13 Feb. 1582/83, named sons, John and James Chilton, daughters Alice, Anne and Margaret, wife, Isabell and her children - Thomas Furner and Susannah Furner. To sons James he left two tenements in Canterbury. Isabell was evidently a recent 2nd wife of Lyonell. and not James mother (whose name is unknown).
