Note: Many in the online community believe that George's wife's maiden name was Armstrong, although no one has yet offered evidence to support the claim. The "Mary Armstrong" buried at Thyatira and thought by some to be George's wife, isn't. If she were his wife, her surname would be "Brandon", and Mary Armstrong isn't buried near George. There is space next to George's grave for two other graves, either vacant or unmarked. Perhaps Mary Ann Brandon lies beside him in an unmarked grave.
George's gravestone is inscribed with the death date Dec 14th 1773, age 70. He wrote his will in November 1772, and Rowan County, NC court records show the will was probated in Feb 1773 - therefore, we know that George's death date is inscribed incorrectly. The presumption is that he died in Dec 1772 and perhaps his stone was added at a later date, after memories had faded.
George and his wife, Mary Ann, left York County, PA in late 1766 andmultimately settled on vacant land in southwestern current-day Davie County. In his will, he names his children:
Sons: John, George, Abraham and Christopher
Daughters: Eleanor Brandon, Jane Silvers, Mary McGuire and Sidney Withrow.
George [Jr.] died in 1821 without issue, leaving his brothers and sisters (or their children) as his heirs. The brothers and sisters named in his estate settlement papers correspond with the names in George [Sr.]'s will, giving us a good level of confidence that we know the family members' names in full.
