About Mary Jane Estep, of Letchwalt

Mary was born in about 1712, probably in Maryland. She married Thomas Estep in 1730. She died in 1793 in Rowan County, North Carolina.

There's no good evidence that this Mary Lane was a daughter of Dutton Lane and Pretitia Tydings, but there's plenty of evidence that she wasn't:

  1. Dutton Lane named daughters Margaret and Sary (Sarah) in his 1716 will, but not a daughter named Mary, even though she was still living.
  2. No Mary is named as a daughter in Barnes, a well-researched and highly regarded source.
  3. No Mary is named as a daughter in James.
  4. No Mary is named as a daughter in Schultz.
  5. There isn't agreement on her last name at birth. Although it's generally agreed that she married Thomas Estep in 1730, Yates Publishing's U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 doesn't list a surname for the Mary that he married. Her Find a Grave memorial says she was a Lane, but FamilySearch Family Tree says she was a Collins (neither with any evidence). Geni calls her "Mary Jane (Lane) Estep, of Letchwalt," perpetuating the error that she was the Mary Letchwalt who married Thomas Estep on 4 Mar 1797, but that Thomas Estep was actually her grandson, not her husband.

In the absence of any good evidence and in the face of strong evidence that she wasn't a child of Dutton and Pretitia Lane, she should be detached from this family.
