About Mary Hyde

Mary French's grave is the oldest known grave in the Cotton Street cemetery in Newton. The Newton Historical Society feels that Jonathon Hyde is also buried there, but, if so, his grave is unmarked.

From  The New England Historical and Genealogical Register (Google eBook) The Society, 1917 - New England Vols. 37-52 (1883-98), page 257:

Jonathan Hyde and his first wife, Mary, were received into full communion in the church 8 Jan. 1661/2, and he was admitted as a freeman 27 May 1663. He made a marriage contract with John Rediat, the father of his second wife, 2 Jan. 1673/4. (76., vol. 6, fo. 169.)

Research Notes

This profile was initially created to describe Mary French who became the wife of Nathaniel Hammond, thus the parents of Sarah Hammond as noted by Wheeler (1900) in his History of Stonington, p. 663. Recent research centered upon the relevant Sarah Hammond has demonstrated that the Wheeler reference is in error on that relationship (Sarah Hammond was a daughter of Mary Griffin), hence Mary French is now detached as the spouse of Nathaniel Hammond.
