About Myrtle Louise Horn

Biography

Myrtle Louise (Quillen) Horn was born on March 29, 1885 in Tabor, Fremont Co, Iowa. Her parents were James Robert Quillen and Clara Etta (Weight) Ricker.

Myrtle married George Rufus Redman (Horne) Horn on November 3, 1902 in Nishnabotna, Atchison Co, Missouri. Together they had the following children: Earl August Horn; Mary Izetta "Mae" (Horn) Anderson; Eva Louise (Horn) Miller; August Rufus Horn; Edna Eileen (Horn) Palmatier.

She died on November 7, 1956 in Omaha, Douglas Co, Nebraska and was buried in Ridge Cemetery, Fremont, Dodge, Nebraska, United States.

Her grandson Ridge Durand erroneously believed she was born on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota and that she was Lakota. Pictures of her clearly indicate, however, that she was Anglo. Myrtle told her daughter Evelyn (Horn) Miller that her family was not German, but "Black Dutch." This term is sometimes applied to the descendants of mixed marriages between whites and Indians in Pennsylvania. It came from the large-scale conversions of Pennsylvania Indians to various Pennsylvania-Dutch (German) religions in the 19th century.

She was living with her mother's parents in 1900, and underage (17) in 1902 and living at Nishnabotna, Holt County, Missouri when she married George Horn. Her parents were divorced and her mother signed the consent form.

Myrtle died at the age of 71 after a five year illness. According to her obituary, she was a member of the First Methodist Church. Her daughter Evelyn (Horn) Miller said that most of Myrtle's family is in Iowa (1993).
