Biography

Nathan Fish was probably born about 1660, or earlier, in Sandwich, Plymouth Colony, likely the son of Nathaniel Fish and his second wife, Lydia Miller [1][2]

Nathan Fish and Deborah Barrows married at Plymouth on 20 December 1687.[3] Plymouth marriage records state, "Nathn ffish Was Married to Deborah Barrows the 20th of december 1687".[4] Nathan's wife's name does not appear in Sandwich records, but the Plymouth church records state "Deborah Fish (who was Barrow) living now at Sandwich was July 15 (1688) declared guilty of fornication with her now husband before marriage."[5]

In 1712 or 1713, Nathan Fish was alloted Lot #2 in the Plains section, and lot #24 in the Hills section, of the "New Purchase" of 1681.[6] His son Nathan would have been aged 18 at this time, too young to receive a share in the division of lots, therefor, Nathan Sr. must have been living.

Research Notes

Disputed/Disproved Birth

Date: 27 NOV 1648
Place: Sandwich, Barnstable, MA, USA[7]
This birth record reads: "164[8] Nathaneel fish was born the 27th of november." Clearly Nathan's older brother, not himself.
Disputed/Disproved Marriage

The marriage of Nathan Fish and Deborah Burgess in a 1984 NEHGR article, "The Wife of Nathan Fish of Falmouth," has been disproved:[8] This article states that the 1709 copy "in the opinions of [the author and] several others, the Falmouth record reads: "Nathan fish and debro burg were mared the 25d day of december in the year 1686."

A TAG article in 2005 concludes: "Nathan Fish and Deborah Barrows were married at the date in Plymouth vital records, 20 December 1687, and that their son "bartolew" was born on 16 Jun 1688 (not 1687), for which the Plymouth Church admonished Deborah Fish for fornication. Consequently, there is no basis for asserting the existence of a daughter of Jacob and Mary (Nye) Burgess named Deborah. [9]

Disputed Death Date

One import gave his death date as March 17, 1719 in Sandwich, Barnstable, Mass. After checking Sandwich & Falmouth VRs, findagrave.com, capecodgravestones.com, Lester Warren Fish's genealogy, TAG and the NEHGR, as well as Barnstable County Probate records, the conclusion is that this is a date incorrectly taken from an article discussing the possibility of a Burgess wife, and the date is actually the death date of Jacob Burgess, not Nathan Fish. The date is found in the Pedigree files on FamilySearch.org, but no where in a reliable source.
