Biography

Nathaniel Fish, born about 1688,[1] was baptized in the First Parish Church in Sandwich, Barnstable County, (then) Plymouth Colony on 19 May 1706 with his siblings Thomas, Lydia, Mehetable, and Jemima, all children of Nathaniel Fish.[2] His mother's name is unknown.

He married first Dorothy Ellis, the daughter of Freeman and Mercy (Winslow) Ellis, on 23 December 1713 in Sandwich.[3] Dorothy died about 1720, probably soon after the birth of her fourth child.[4]

Nathaniel married secondly about 1722 to Abigail whose maiden name is unknown. Nathaniel's will mentions wife Abigail, and two daughters named Abigail, one single the other Abigail Howland.[5][6]

Nathaniel died in Sandwich not long before 12 March 1774, the date his will was proved.[6]

Will

He signed his will 14 Jul 1772[6] in which he named wife Abigail, sons Simeon the executor, Stephen "if he be living", Thomas "if he be living", Nathaniel and Jonathan, unmarried daughter Abigail Fish as well as daughter Abigail Howland, daughters Content Hamblen and Lydia Backhouse, granddaughters Content and Lucretia Fish "the Children of my son Thomas Fish."

"In the name of God Amen I Nathaniel Fish of Sandwich in the County of Barnstable in the Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England Gentleman being advanced in years & under Decay of Body but through devine goodness of sound & disposing mind & memory do make this my Last Will & Testament And first I Commend my soul to the Mercy of God through Jesus Christ and my Body to a decent Burial at the Discretion of my Executor hereafter named and as to my Worldly Estate I [illegible] & dispose as follows (viz)

I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Abigail instead of her dower or Power of thirds in my Estate, yearly & every year during her life thirty pounds of flax from the [illegible]and one third of the wool produced by my sheep and the use of the southerly front room in my dwelling house and the use of all my household furniture and a Comfortable Support in Sickness and health out of my Estate and as I have above given my wife one third of the wool produced by my sheep my will is that she have thirty pounds of wool yearly and no more all the above to be provided by my son Simeon.

I gife & bequeath to my Daughter Abigail Fish as long as she continues single the Priviledge of Living in the room with her mother and of the Chamber over it where her loom stands to weave there and the use of the bedroom where her bed now is and after her mothers decease the use of the room above given to my wife while my said Daughter lives single and also during said term her Victuals and after my wifes decease ten pounds of wool & ten pounds of Flax yearly so long as she lives single and also after my wifes Decease I give her so much of my household goods as shall be equal in value to what I have given to either of my Daughters Content Hamblen or Lydia Backhouse at their Marriage or since and if my household Goods be not sufficient I then give her so much money as added to my household goods shall make her euqal to Content or Lydia provided that while my said Daughter Abigail Lives Single she Live with & take care of my wife Abigail during the Life of my said Wife

I give & Bequeath to my Daughter Abigail Howland one bed being that which was her mothers to take it after the decease of my Wife

I give & Bequeath to my Daughter Content Hamblen one Dollar I give & Bequeath to my Daughter Lydia Backhouse one Dollar I give & Bequeath to my son Stephen Fish if he be Living one Dollar I give & Bequeath to my son Thomas Fish if he be Living one Dollar I give & Bequeath to my granddaughters Content Fish & Lucretia Fish the Children of my son Thomas Fish to each of them one Dollar I give & Bequeath to my two sons Nathaniel Fish & Jonathan Fish besides what I have already given them to each one Dollar My Will is that if any of my household Goods remain after my Daughter Abigail Fish hath taken as above is given her the said remainder be equally divided between my three Daughters Content Hamblin Lydia Backhouse & the said Abigail Fish

I give devise[?] & bequeath to my son Simeon Fish his Heirs & assigns for ever all my land Buildings & Real Estate whatever & wherever it be and all my Livestock & all other personal Estate not herin otherwise Disposed of provided he pay my just Debts & funeral Charges and provide & do for my wife & Daughter Abigail Fish as above mentioned & pay all the Legacies above Bequeathed

Finaly I Constitute & appoint my son Simeon Fish sole Executor of this my Last Will & Testament In consideration whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fourteenth Day of July AD one thousand seven hundred & seventy two
