GEDCOM Note

Nathaniel was the great, great, great grandfather of J. Pierpont Morgan, the eminent financier.

"Nathaniel's descent was from the Morgans of Wales, concerning whom the first record seems to be in the eleventh century. The one who came out to America was Miles, who was born in England in 1616 and arrived in Boston in January 1636. Soon afterwards he set out with Colonel William Pynchon, westward, through the forests and over the mountains in the valley of the Connecticut River. There they founded a colony at the place where the city of Springfield now stands. Miles Morgan's allotment of land was on the west bank of the river in what was known as the North Parish of West Springfield. His acres remained in the family for upwards of two hundred years. He first married Prudence Gilbert, whose family had settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony; but whether he met her on the ship which brought him over or after he landed is not known. By her he had at least eight children and all but two married and settled not far from his homestead. Their descendants were many, and some of them became very well known. Nine years after his wife's death Miles married Elizabeth Bliss, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Bliss of Hartford. Of this union there was only one child, born in 1671 and christened Nathaniel.
Nathaniel Morgan in his turn, like his father, was a man of good repute, noted for his industry and public service. His wife was Hannah Bird of Farmington, and they had seven sons and two daughters. As each of the boys grew up, his father gave him a piece of land and thus saved himself most of the trouble of making a last will and testament. When he died in 1752 he left a record of an honorable life which was peacefully passed between the warlike times that immediately preceded and directly followed his period. . . .
As a grown man of twenty-six and with half of his eventual family growing, Nathaniel soon succeeded to some of his father's civic responsibilities. He became fence viewer, which was by that time a far more important post, corresponding in some ways to the post of official land surveyor. [According to the Town Records of Springfield he was elected Fence Viewer in March 1692-1693, 1695, 1696, 1699, 1708, 1713, 1715, 1717, 1722.] Later, he was hay warden, a post that continued in importance in the community as long as certain lands were held in common. [He was elected Haywarden or Field driver in March 1695, 1697, 1699, 1705, 1706, 1708, 1713, 1715, 1717, and 1722.] He, too, was a constable [March 1712] of the town for a time and surveyor of highways [in 1718 and 1729]. He also served as town assessor [from 1733 to 1734]."

He is sometimes listed as being born in Hartford, CT., as dying in June instead of August, and as marrying in June and/or in Farmington, CT.
A good guess for his christening might be August 23, 1671 (sometimes given as his birth date).
He might possibly have obtained his marriage license on January 16, 1690/91 . . . .
