Nathaniel was born in England and came to Boston with his family as a young child; he was the first of a line of seven Nathaniels who were expert in making shoes and boots.
He lived in Robert Reynolds' original house on Milk Street in Boston.
He was active in fighting against the Indians (King Phillips War) and was a member of Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company, as were numerous of his descendants. See: Bodge's account of soldiers in King Phillip's War
Served as Boston's Chief Constable (Police Chief).
During military period, he probably saw farmland he liked in what is now Rhode Island. Later moved there and was one of founders of Bristol, and was later a selectman.
He had 11 children with two wives.
The witness to inventory in his will was Josiah Franklin, father of Benjamin Franklin, who was a tenant in the original Reynolds house on Milk Street in Boston.
"It thus came about that for many years Nathaniel was the landlord of Josiah Franklin, father of the famous statesman. In the little house rented of Captain Reynolds, Benjamin Franklin was born, January 6, 1706, o. s., son of Josiah and Abiah (Folger) Franklin." (p. 45)

Served in militia from Massachusetts. Commanded the garrison at Chelmsford in 1676
