Death Claims Newton Hawkins on Oct. 25

Newton Eldridge Hawkins, 74-year-old grocery merchant, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. E.P. Hairgrove, 421 North 10th street, on Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, from an illness which began five months ago.

Final rites for the aged resident were conducted from the Church of Christ, with the pastor of the Church of Christ officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery here with the Hodges Funeral Home directing.

Pallbearers were H.A. Whitefield, Walter White, V.L. Yarbrough, Joe C. Dickson, Ed McCreary, and C.E. Sweatt. Those in charge of the floral offerings were Mrs. Herman Vallance, Mrs. T.A. Everett, Mrs. R.D. Harrison, Mrs. Raymond Adcock, Mrs. Ellis Rogers, and Mrs. Bill Breeland.

Mr. Hawkins, a native Texan, was born on October 14, 1862, in Hamilton County, Texas. He resided there until he was a young man. He resided in Donley County for some time, living in the Hedley community; and moved to Hall County five years ago. He had conducted a small grocery establishment on Main street here since moving here five years ago.

Mr. Hawkins was a former minister of the Church of Christ, and had been affiliated with that religious organization for a half-century.

Survivors are the wife, Mrs. Cordelia Hawkins of Memphis; five daughters, Mrs. J.H. Jenkins of Westwood, Calif.; Mrs. E.P. Hairgrove of Memphis, Mrs. Arnold Weghorst of Walsenberg, Colo.; Mrs. H.E. Terry of Redwing, Colo.; and two sons, A.L. Hawkins of Trinidad and Claude G. Rives of Purcell, Okla.

Mrs. Jenkins was unable to attend the funeral. D.D. Banta of Norman, Okla., was among the relatives here for the final rites.
