A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A070149

Thomas Lewis was born on March 22, 1759 at Accomack County, VA. He was the son of Spencer Lewis (b ca 1713-1778) and Mary Willett (b ca 1736).

Pvt. Thomas Lewis served in the Revolutionary War between 1778-1781 at Accomack County, VA.

Taken from his Revolutionary War Pension Application: Pvt. Thomas (of Spencer) Lewis applied for a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War on August 29, 1832 at Accomack County, Va., Thomas Lewis, age 73 states that he enrolled in a Company commanded by Thomas Bayly first, then by William Riley and last by John Custis to the end of the war, attached to the 2nd Regiment in the Virginia Militia.

He entered service in January 1778 and kept guard on both bay & sea side in Accomack County at a place called the Block House on Folly Creek. Many alarms & marches at different times up the bay as far as Hooper & Straits in boats; and at Annemessic in MD to subdue the Torries; however they fled after a few fires. Also on Watts & Foxes Island in pursuit of the enemy. Served upward of 2 years. He was born in Accomack County, VA in 1759.

Pvt. Thomas Lewis married his 1st wife, Sarah Clark on October 29, 1787 at Accomack County, VA. Thomas & Sarah Clark Lewis had 1 child: John (of Thomas) Lewis (b ca 1790-9/30/1839.)

Susannah (Kelly?) was his 2nd wife. They married on September 7, 1826 in Accomack County, VA.

Sarah Ann Hart was his 3rd wife. They married on February 9, 1837 To this union was born 2 sons: William Thomas Lewis (b ca 1837-1907) and Lt. John Dennis Lewis (2/18/1841 - 1/11/1931).
