The first of several Long's, Robert Long, who came to New England a rrived at Jamestown in 1620, on the ship "Supply." Then came Richard L ong in 1620, to Virginia on the "London." Another Robert Long arrived a t Plymouth on the "Ann" in 1623. Still another Robert Longe (Deacon), m ade a brief appearance at Charleston, but settled at Newbury, Massachus etts. There were other Long's, but only one, Joseph Longe, who came wi th Winthrop in 1630 and settled at Dorchester, Massachusetts appears to b e connected with the Robert Long of this sketch.

Robert remained at St. Albans after his marriage until 1629, where e ight of his children were born. At this time he removed to Dunstable i n Bedfordshire County, finding employment there as an innkeeper. At th e age of 45, Robert obtained a certificate from the local minister and J ustice of the Peace for permission to immigrate with his family to New E ngland. On July 7, 1635, he and his family departed from London on the s hip 'Defense,' Mr. Edmund Bostocke, Master, along with about one hundre d passengers. The ships manifest show's his profession as "Inholder," a nd "Elizabeth his wife 30, Luce Mercer a servant 18, Mitchell 20, Sarr a 18, Robert 16, Eliza 12, Anne 10, Mary 9, Rebecca 8 John: 8, Zachary 4 , and Joshua ." They arrived at Boston Harbor on October 8, 1635.

Robert Long settled at Charlestown, Massachusetts and is first foun d on Colony records there when he and his wife Elizabeth, became member s of the First Church of Charlestown on February 17, 1636. Colony reco rds further state that "Robert Long was a honored Charleston, Massachus etts Pioneer from Bedfordshire, Dunstable, a innholder" and further th at he " was a first settler to New England, ae 70 in 1660 at Marblehead , Massachusetts."

Book # 1 of Charleston records shows that Robert Long in 1635, help ed dispose of the estate of Isaac Cole. On May 25, 1636, Robert appear s on a list of freemen at Charleston. Records of 1637, state that he p urchased a ten-acre lot at "Mystic Side." In 1638, records show he was i n possession of "13 parcels of land registered." On March 18, 1642, Ro bert acted as one of three witness's for the disillusions of the estate o f Edward Woods.

For his home and place of employment, Robert purchased for £100 pou nds, the "Great House" at the foot of Town Hill. It had previously bee n used as the second meeting place for the First Church of Charleston. D uring the time it was used as the town hall, Robert operated an Inn in p art of the building, calling it the "Two Cranes" (or Three Cranes). It w as also known as the "Grand Ordinary." Records of Charleston and the C hurch state that: "After having been used as a place of worship until 1 636, it became the Tavern, or Ordinary, and as such was kept, during th ree-quarters of a century, by Robert Long or his sons, being known as ' The Two Cranes' from its sign." In 1683 it contained, "among other roo ms, a great lower room, a great chamber, a kitchen, and a wine cellar; a nd then or later, a brew-house was attaches. As early as 1712 it was c alled 'The Old Tavern.' This building remained in the Long family unti l "June 17, 1775, when, with the whole town, was burned by the Britis h."

Robert Long was a businessman and large landholder, due in part fro m his affiliation with the oligarchy of Charleston, of which he was a m ember. The ruling minority of Charlestown, about 15% of the total mal e population, was made up of gentry families, merchants, yeomen and ar tisans, or, the Charlestown elite. The oligarchy was composed of membe rs from diverse backgrounds and English Counties, including, Edward Con verse from Navestock, Joseph Hills from Malden, John Greene from Dorset , and Robert Long from Dunstable. Every member was of high literacy, o f middle age and active supporters of Puritanism. Because of this olig archy, its members were awarded large favors, mostly in tracts of land. H e was addmitted as a member to the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Comp any in 1639, a distinguished military society. When Robert Long died, h e left a very large estate.

The will of Robert Long was dated July l0,1658 and probated Feb. 6, 1 663/4. Bequeaths were made to Wife & children. Also to brother Johnso n and Grandson, Samuel Long.
