Samuel Morse migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

Disputed Origins

1865 Abner Morse identified Rev. Thomas Morse as the father of Samuel Morse the immigrant [NEHGR 19:264-66]

1929 G. Andrews Moriarty researched this surname in Suffolk, and constructed a pedigree. There were three possible Samuel's but he concluded the most likely to be Rev. Thomas Morse of Boxted. [NEHGR 83:70-84, 278-94, 286-89 1948 Robert H. Montgomery, analyzing Moriarty's arguments concluded that Moriarty had not proved his case. [TAG 24:147-56] Within the year Moriarty defended his conclusions.[TAG 25:54-56]

2007 Anderson's Great Migration accepts Rev. Thomas Morse as father of Samuel "as the most likely solution", but welcomes new research to strengthen or debunk the position. [p. 173, 174]

2007 data from the Morse Society states his parents are Thomas Morse and Margaret King].

2011: Disputes Thomas as Samuel's father, and indicates Richard Morse and Margaret Sympson as Samuel's Parents. Registers at Dedham: Richard m. Margaret 15 Feb 1586. Samuel bpt 25 July 1587. (p. 201 link at Ancestry) [1] The immigrant was age 50 in 1635 = b. 1585. Note: this also makes his marriage in 1602 at the age of 15.

Biography

Samuel Morse was baptized 12 Jun 1576, at Boxted, Essex, England, probably the son of Rev. Thomas Morse of Foxearth, Essex.

or Samuel Morse was son Richard Morse and Margaret Sympson. Registers at Dedham: Samuel bpt 25 July 1587.

Samuel Morse emigrated in the Increase to Watertown April 15, 1635. He was then 50 years of age and his wife Elizabeth 48.[2][3] His son Joesph, age 20, immigrated with Samuel and Elizabeth. [4] [5]

In 1636, Samuel removed to Dedham, where he was a signer of The Covenant of Dedham.

In 1636 he was involved in purchasing 300 acres of meadow and upland for the town. In 1637 he worked with Edward Allen and Abraham Shaw to process wood, likely for building. Later that year he was granted meadow land and 4 acres of swamp.

Additionally in 1637 he was appointed to a committee to look into making a bridge over a river (likely the Charles River). In 1638 he agreed to cut down trees for the town to use for building for 6 pence. He was also appointed measure out parcels of meadow land for the town and was also appointed to investigate damage done by some pigs. Also in 1638 he was given 8 acres of meadow land. In 1639 he was given an additional 2.5 acres of meadow land next to his previous grant.

In 1640 he was told to clear a portion of land past the east brook for their working cattle. He was also deputized to inspect the bridges and highways around the town. Also in 1640 he was named in a document involving land, however the page was partially destroyed so the details are unknown. He became a freeman of Dedham on 10/8/1640.

In 1641 he was 1 of 7 appointed men to act on behalf of the town. He also was assigned to inspect fences in the middle plain. In 1642 he was appointed to measure out a large area of plains. Later that year he was granted a parcel of land with his son Daniel and another townsman. In 1643 he was granted 6 acres of upland. He would later be appointed to lay out more land for the town in 1643. In 1644 he was appointed to help clear out a newly purchased meadow with 7 other men. In 1645 he was given 10 rods of land in the great plain and later 3 acres of woodland.

He was the town’s surveyor in 1646 and in 1647 he was 1647 given authority to make other townsmen that are behind on their highway work to force them to complete their duty. In 1648 he was deputized to create a highway through Daniel’s land on the west side of the Charles River for John Gay.

About 1650, he removed to Medfield, where he and two of his sons were of the thirteen first families.

Of the first thirteen lots apportioned in Medfield, Massachusetts in May 1650, Lot Number Four went to Daniel Morse (Samuel's son) and Lot Number Three to Samuel Bullen, husband of Samuel's daughter, Mary Morse. The following year "Joseph Morse, with his aged father, Samuel, obtained grants on Pound Street."[6] In 1650 he was granted 2.5 acres of upland and in 1651 he was granted 1 acre of the great plain. In 1652 he sold 2 acres of his land to Thomas Wight.

Samuell Morse died December 5, 1654, and his widow, Elizebeth, June 20, 1655, both in Medfield. [7] [8]

Samuel Morse and town of Dedham

HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF MEDFIELD, MASS. - 1650-1886, edited by William S. Tilden in 1887

Medfield historians believe that the home of Samuel Morse was the first house burned by King Philip in the King Philip's War. Samuel, son of Samuel Morse had a portion of his father's and grandfather's (Joseph) estate. He is known to have had a house in 1663, which stood on a little knoll a short distance east of the junction of Main and Pound Streets. The house was burned by the Indians in 1776 and never rebuilt. The cellar is still believed visible today (2004). The story is told and passed into history that Samuel found an Indian hiding in his hay barn early that February morning, roused his family and got them out of the house to a local garrison and turned to watch his house burn. Also believed is that Samuel's early morning discovery and prompt sounding of an alarm warned the rest of the town of King Philip's presence before the attack plans were completed and saved many of the towns homesteads.

Information from the MORSE Society as of February 25, 2004

He was third signer of the Dedham Covenant. The town was originally called "Contentment". He was a FREEMAN on October 6, 1640. He was a First Settler in 1649 in Medfield, Norfolk County, Mass. He died December 5, 1654 per Medfield, Mass vital records. He was buried after April 5, 1654. A Monument was erected in Medfield, Mass by their grateful descendants in 1858. The engraving is:

As for that little estate of outward things which the Lord hath been pleased to bestow upon me, whether they be moveable , as houses, lands, chattel, household stuff, etc., I will and bequeath them all unto Elizabeth Morse, my dear wife to enjoy, possess and make use of her life, during the term thereof, and after her decease out of life my will is that all that estate which she was in life possessed of shall be divided amongst my children, both sons and daughters, that is to say, John Morse, Daniel Morse, Mary Bullin and Ann Morse, the widow of my dearly beloved son, Joseph Morse, deceased, who with my said children's sake of my beloved Joseph. Samuel Morse was born on June 12, 1576 in Boxted, England, the son of Rev. Thomas and Margaret (King) Morse. He married Elizabeth Jasper on June 29, 1602 in Redgrave, Suffolk, England. He emigrated to America with his wife and seven children on the ship "Increase" that left England April 15, 1635. They had seven children: John, Daniel, Joseph, Elizabeth, Samuel, Sarah and Mary.

They supposedly had another child: Eleanor Helena who was born in 1616 and died in 1694.

They settled first in Watertown, MA where they "became comfortable to the orders and discipline and doctrines too of the Puritan Church to the joy which was doubtless their motive for emigrating. Representative men and old families of southeastern Massachusetts". 1912. Vol III page 1774

Rev. Abner Morse states that Rev. Thomas was undoubtedly the father of Samuel Morse, who April 15, 1635 emigrated in the Increase to Watertown, MA. He was then 50 years of age and his wife Elizabeth 48. In 1636 Samuel removed to Dedham, MA and about 1650 to Medfield, MA where he and two of his sons were of the thirteen first families
