Biography

Samuel was born to Richard Sarson and Jane Mayhew Sarson.[1]

Samuel married Ann Clay in Boston in 1694. Their children were:

Ann (March 25 1697, married Moses Belcher),
Jane (May 25 1700, married Lamuel Little),
Thomas (May 25 1703).
Thomas was born after his father died, and a note by his record says "Sorsons ye was ye late widow Clay." Ann later married John Worth of Sherbourn, Nantucket on Sept 1 1704.
Books were very scarce at this time. Samuel Sarson was considered to be one of the wealthiest people in the area. But he only owned 4 books.

In 1700 Samuel Sarson, Matthew Mayhew and Jacob Norton were field drivers for stray cattle in the area.

Samuell Sarson was on the committee to view and consider where the main road was to be built. It was made in 1700.

Assanootacket Pond. — It is recorded (1685) that Puttuspaqun, of Sanchacantacket, sold to his cousins Hester and Ellis Daggett" a certain meadow and on June II, 1703, Ellis Daggett sold to Samuel Sarson "a certain parcel of meadow.

Samuel died in 1703, months before his father Richard died. Richard's estate was divided between Samuel's widow Ann and Thomas Lothrop, husband of Samuel's sister Mehitable.

At his death, Samuel's Will revealed he was a part of the Martha's Vineyard slave ownership and slave trade.

Governor Thomas Mayhew’s grandson, Samuel Sarson, who died August 24, 1703, included in his estate “a Negro woman valued at twenty pounds.” In 1734, the estate of Ebenezer Allen of Chilmark included “Negroes” valued at 200 pounds along with two beds for servants, glasses, one pound five shillings, knives and forks at 18 shillings and 600 pair of sheep at 510 pounds and 17 shillings.” Jane Cathcart of Chilmark, in June 1741, willed her “molato (mulatto) servant, Ismael Lobb, now in the service of Captain Timothy Daggett of Edgartown .. his freedom during life after he shall arrive at age 30.” Cornelius Bassett’s personal estate at the time of his death in 1779 included “one Negro boy, Pero, 33 pounds. One Negro woman, Chole (Chloe?) 27 years … 150 pounds. One garl (girl), Nancy 7 years … 180 pounds.” Samuel Bassett of Chilmark owned land in both Chilmark and Edgartown. His will, probated in 1770 details his property listing “one Negro woman, two boys … sixty pounds .. pitchforks, scythes, rakes.” [2]
