About Sgt John Hugh Nelson, CSA
Bro. J.H. Nelson was born in Caldwell County May 19, 1841, and died May 22, 1915, aged 74 years and 3 days. He was a Confederate soldier and did not make a profession of faith until after the Civil war. He first united with Shiloh Methodist Church near Patterson and about 1895 he was baptized into the fellowship of Yadkin Baptist Church, and by that church was licensed and ordained to the ministry. During his ministry he served the following churches: Yadkin, Piney Grove, Blair's Fork, Rock Springs, Green Valley, Mulberry, Richlands (Bethany), and Nelson's Chapel. The last he organized, and at which his body was buried. He had much of the evangelistic spirit and many were led to Christ under his ministry. He was greatly loved and highly esteemed by all who knew him intimately. He will be much missed. [H.M. Beach, obituary, 1915. Published in "Obituaries found in the Minutes of the Caldwell Baptist Association," Journal of the Caldwell County Genealogical Society, Vol. 12 (Spring 2003), p. 48.]
According to his obituary, John Nelson was a veteran of the Civil War, serving until taken prisoner at Point Lookout. "He was at home on parole when Lee surrendered."
He married Minerva Jane Coffey on 17 September 1865. While preaching at Nelson's Chapel he suffered a stroke and died a short while later.
