7. Bloomfield News (Weekly Newspaper), Volume XLI, Number 4, Page 1, Column 4, Thursday, December 7, 1916. NOTE: The Bloomfield New is no longer In existence. "Pioneer Lady Passes Away. - - Susan EMERY was born September 28, 1835, and died at the home of her son, Harvey N. EMERY in Taylor Township, December 3, 1916, aged 81 years 2 months and 5 days. She was the daughter of Robert MCWHIRTER who was one of Greene County’s pioneer citizens. She was married to Nathaniel EMERY, November 15, 1855. To this union seven children were born, viz: Major Jonas A. EMERY, late of Bloomfield, Indiana, Mary, who died in the bloom of young womanhood, Jessie W. of Parsons, Kansas, Charles S. and Harvey N. of Taylor township, Mrs. Lilly RAYBURN, of Spokane, Washington, and Robert Ambrose, who died in early childhood. Her husband departed this life February 21, 1909, at Bloomfield, Indiana. From the date of her marriage she lived on a farm in Taylor Township, where she toiled unceasingly for the comfort and support of her family. She was industrious and ambitious and her generosity and hospitality in her home will be remembered by many. She was happiest when serving others and no night was too dark or day too cold to keep her from her neighbor who was sick or in distress. Of recent years she has been deprived of these privileges because of age and infirmity. She was converted and united with the M. E. church at Simpson Chapel about the year 1860 under the pastorate of Jesse WALKER, from which time she has lived a zealous, earnest Christian life. The writer of the sketch well remembers the powerful, fervent and effectual prayers and brilliant testimonies of her early Christian life, as well as those of later years. Only a few years ago she said, - - I never pillow my head or close my eyes for the night without asking God in his goodness and mercy to protect and care for me through the night - - Her memory will be an inspiration to us who knew her as children, during her life of usefulness. - - The funeral was held at Simpson Chapel Tuesday, conducted by Elder J. A. SPENCER. Interment in the church yard cemetery. -- We desire to sincerely thank the friends and neighbors for their kindness and sympathy and help during the illness and death of our mother. - - H. N. EMERY, Chas. S. EMERY, Minerva EMERY and children."
