" From notes from Richard Jones:

Thomas Jones was a tailor and a Puritan who with his wife Ann, four children and two servants, set sail in a 100 ton vessl named "The Confidence of London" on 24 April 1638 bound from Southhampton to Hingham, Mass. They were from Caversham, Oxfordshire, England and (assumed) fleeing the persecution of the King agains the Puritans". He settled immediately in Hingham, Mass, where he was listed as a proprietor in 1638. In 1657 Thomas and his son Abraham were listed a proprietors in Hull, Mass where he had moved in about 1644.

Soon after his second marriage Thomas and his wife, Abigail, went with at least two of his children and with two or three of her children to settle in Manchester, Essex County (Manchester was originally called Jeffry's Creek).

Thomas was listed as town clerk in Manchester in 1658 and a selectman in 1668. Thomas held received land grants in Hingham, Hull and Manchester, receiving one of the orignial home lots on Town Hill and in 1651 he bought a small adjoining lot on Town Street.

Some sources list him as the son of Robert Jones, of Hingham

: THE PIONEERS OF MASSACHUSETTS, Jude, servant to Thomas Jones, came in the Confidence April 11, 1638. He died about April, 1654. The Gen. Court adm. his will 3 May, 1654, but it does not appear. The widow m. 3, Thomas Jones; she Joined with son Nathl. and daus. Mary Ryley and Abigail Pickworth 6 April, 1668, in appointing son John attorney for business at Rowley. [Es. Files XVIII and XXXI.] "

Thomas Jones , who was my 10 great grandfather, married Ann Cowdrie [SIC] in 1628 and she died in 1657. He then married his second wife, Abigail Elithrop in June of 1657 documented in "Massachusetts Town and Vital Records" (this is a handwritten record).

Abigail was a widow at that time. There are other documented Massachusetts records which list marriage on the same date for an Abigail Waite and an Elizabeth which are typed transcriptions of handwritten records. Research can get extremely confusing with transcription of records.

Most Sincerely, Connie Houtz
