Tobias L. Smyth

One source says that this Tobias was the son of Ericus Smyth... This Tobias Smyth died in Washington Co. Va. His Estate was appraised 2-18-1783, and settled on 3-21-1784. He married in Augusta Co. Va. and moved to Washington Co. Va. Tobias Smyth & Mary McDonald Tobias Smyth was born March 16, 1725 in New Castle, New Castle County, Delaware, the third son of Hans Jurgen Smidt and Maria Stalcop. In 1748 (age 23), he married Mary McDonald (age 18). Mary was born January 19, 1730 in Augusta County, Virginia, daughter of Bryan McDonald (of Ireland) and Catherine Robinson. Tobias and Mary had eight children, all but two born in Augusta and Washington County, Virginia: Tobias once was a hatter and owned a plantation in the Greenfield-Amsterdam community in New Castle, Delaware. Tobias died in November 1781 (age 56) in Washington County, Virginia, and Mary died there after 1808 (age 78). Court minutes on motion of Mary Smith and Jonas Smith state that administration was granted them on the Estate of Tobias Smith, deceased, giving Bond and Security. Whereupon they, together with James Dysart and Edward Smith, their securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the sum of 500 pounds Specie for the faithful administration of said descendants' Estate.

Annika Peterson Caupany was a daughter of Peter Peterson Caupany and his wife Helena.  She was a granddaughter of Samuel & Brita Peterson.  He probably was named after Ericus Tobias Bjork who was the beloved pastor of Old Swedes Church and married Christina Stalcop, his aunt. In the translation of the Old Swedes Church records from Swedish to English by Horace Burr, errors were made.  These errors are recorded and on Pg 160 it shows that on pg 294 Line 5 Child Johan (Smith) born 10 May should be Child Tobias born 16 Mar and baptized 21 Mar.  Parents Mans Smith and wife Maria. (Mans should be Hans.)  The sponsor's names were not recorded but were sent by Pat Griffith, Houston, TX, who is a descendant of Tobias through his son George.  Pat originally supplied information and suggested a research of the records of New Castle Co, DE, might reveal the parentage of Tobias Smith/Smyth. Tobias Smith/Smyth md. Sealed and delivered at a court continued and held for Augusta Co. May 23, 1760.  At a court held for Augusta Co 19 Aug 1760 this lease indented from Tobias Smyth was further proved and admitted to record. Signed by J. (ohn) Madison (Clerk of Court. In DB 8 p 364 there is a release Indenture made 13 May 1760 between Tobias Smyth and Wm.  The Houston Place is in Botetourt Co., Va. where the house burned a decade or so ago.  This land was once a part of the Greenfield Plantation.  It is interesting to find that part of the Houston land, including the site of the home place was part of the Tobias Smyth grant of 1755. (Near Robinson's Branch or waters of Tinker Creek-Source: Anne Smith, Petersburg, Va))

 Pgs 39,41-51 Early SW Va Families by Elizabeth Allison-Aracus or Aric Smyth came to America from Sweden in early colonial days; date not know. Family tradition says he was a priest.  His prayer book descended to his grandson Jonas Smyth. (The Swedish Church is Episcopal in its order of Christian ministry and holds to a liturgical service.) His surname written in the book was spelled with a "Y" "Smyth" which has been carried down by some branches of the family.  He had several sons; however, the name of only one has been preserved for us, which was Tobias. One of the children George was married and located near Mountain City, Tenn.( Believe George married 2nd Sarah Halfacre and lived and died in Washington Co., Va. Also believe this Ericus was a brother to Tobias & not his father-his father being Hans George Smith of New Castle Co. Del. Children birth & christening records in Old Swedes Church-Hans George Smith's wife was Maria Stalcop-Ericus, Tobias, Jonas were three of the children's names.  The parish priest on page 424 Records of Old Swedes Church wrote "I have bought a number of Swedish psalm books in the same style with the approval of the Archbishop, and as they seem to be in demand on account of the style, I have written for more, and also humbly requested that the books be sent hereafter may be of the same sort, thus making the instruction of the youth more easy.  My successors who will reap the harvest of this, I hope will never deviate from this, and also will earnestly endeavor to keep up the knowledge of the Swedish language, their mother tongue, which is now much declined."  Believe the book that was signed by Ericus Smyth was one of these Swedish psalm books that was handed down to family members of the Smyth family)

 (Mrs. Allison probably got her information from a little history of the Smyth family from a record written by James K. Smyth 6 Jul 1891 for his daughter Rachel Ann Scott.  He received the information from his father, Tobias Smyth. In this record he stated Tobias, Sr. was a hatter by trade.  James Smyth had seen quite a number of beaver skins, from which he had cut the fur, at his grandfather's.  Tobias Smyth's father Hans George Smith was a hatter also.)

 In Washington Co. Va. there is a survey for John Stalcope for 50A of land which proves the Smith, Stalcops were neighbors. John Stalcop's land was on land Peter Anderson's old corner in 1800 and George Smith's land was adjoining the land Peter Anderson Lives on in 1802. (Ericus Smith,George Smith & Jonas Smith were on the same tax lists in Washington Co., Va.

 Ericus Smyth was the first known member of this family.  His grandson Jonas, son of Tobias, passed on the information. "That his grandfather Ericus Smyth owned a Swedish Bible, in which his name was written SMYTH. He supposed he was a Priest." (Early Settlers of Lee Co. Va. Vol 1-pg 300) Tobias Smith owned land in the same locality as the McDonalds-in the George Robinson settlement, Augusta County, later Botetourt Co, Va. "1755 Tobias Smyth grant 330A on a branch of Buffalo Creek" 30 Oct 1754 TobiasSmyth surveys 254 A on a small branch of Roanoke joining William Snodgrass and his own land."  The land was sold to William Preston as follows, "In 1760, William Preston purchased from Tobias Smyth, 330A and 254A also adjoining on Robinson's Branch near present Greenfield, Botetourt Co., Va.  His son Jonas Smith was granted 400 acres of land on Little Holston and 400 acres on south side of Walker's Mountain in 1781 and 1783; actual settlement in 1772.

 Washington County, formed 1777 from Fincastle Cty., was conterminous with the Parish of Washington, also est. 1777.  The parish was later divided into Holston & Goodson Parishes. Tobias Smyth was living in Washington County, Va, at the time of this death. His estate was appraised Feb. 18, 1783 and was ordered settled Apr 21, 1784 Washington County, Va. Court 21 Nov 1781, minutes-On motion of Mary Smith and Jonas Smith administration was granted them on the Estate of Tobias Smith deceased, giving Bond and Security.  Whereupon they together with James Dysart and Edward Smith their securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the sum of 500 pounds Specie for the faithful administration of said descendants Estate. 1 Dec 1781 Inventory & Appraisement of the Estate of Tobias Smith dec. by Frances Beatty, Andrew Kincannon, Samuel Robinson.  Listed among the items was:

    one wavers loom & Tackling (pg 56 WB 1 Washington Co., Va) Ordered that Samuel Robinson, Francis Beaty, James Kincannon & Andrew Kincannon or any three of them being first sworn appraise the Estate of Tobias Smith Deceased and make Return to next Court- pg 1091 Annals of SW Va by Summers.

 14 June 1781 Pg 394 Robert Williams assignee of Tobias Smith 150A settlement was made in 1772 under Walkers Mountain adjoining John Yancy, Tobias Smith,   On 15 August 1781, Commissioners for the District of Washington & Montgomery Counties certified that Tobias Smith was entitled to 200 acres of land lying in Washington Co on waters of No. Fk of Holston, on south side of Walker's Mountain adjoining James Glynn below, Jonas Smith above, ninety acres of which were surveyed for Benjamin Maiden the 14th of Jan. 1774, by virture of an order of Council passed 16 Dec. 1773, to include his improvements, he having proved to the Court that he was entitled to same by actual settlement made in the year 1772-Washington Co. It is stated he was born in New Castle Co, DE but New Castle Co, DE, was originallyin PA. Delaware was actually part of William Penn's PA Colony. Delaware did not become a state until Dec 7, 1787, making him born in Christina Hundred, William Penn's Colony of PA, Now Wilmington, New Castle Co, DE. He married Mary McDonald in 1748. He was a hatter and owned a plantation in the Greenfield-Amsterdam community in New Castle County.
