William, Earl of Kilmarnock, is the son of James, Lord Boyd, and his wife Dame Katherine Craik. The Scots Peerage V: 173 A date and place of birth has not been identified for him, although he was alive on 2 December 1641, the date upon which his father made his last will and testament and appointed William, Earl of Glencairn, Lord High Chancellor of Scotland, as his son William's tutor testamentar. William's maternal uncle, William Craik of the City of York, appears to have claimed this right, but subsequently renounced all claim which he had in favour of the said William Earl of Glencairn.
