About William Westwood Jones, (C.S.A.)

William Westwood (W. W.) Jones (1841-1916) (UNC 1862) was born in Henderson, N.C., which is now in Vance County.

His younger brother was attorney Armistead Jones.

During the Civil War, William Westwood Jones entered Confederate service in Company G of the 3d N.C. Cavalry in 1862 after completing his college degree.

He was with General Barringer's brigade of Cavalry at the close of the war. In December of 1872 he married Bettie E. Johnson (Elizabeth Earl Johnson) in Raleigh, N.C.

W. W. Jones studied law under Judge William Horn Battle and was admitted to the practice of law in the County Courts in 1867. He was admitted to the bar of the Superior Courts in 1868. He began his practice of law in his hometown of Henderson, N.C. He practiced law in Raleigh with his brother, Armistead Jones, but later moved to Hendersonville, N.C. He moved to Asheville in 1885.

He was a State Senator from 1883-1885. William Westwood Jones is buried with his wife, Elizabeth Earl Johnson Jones.


Graduated from University of North Carolina in 1862. Served with the Forty-First North Carolina Regiment during the Civil War. After the war, he had one of the most extensive law practices in western North Carolina.
