About Zacharie Cloutier

Attention: Do not confuse with his father, Zacharie, who is also a pioneer of Nouvelle-France Notes

Comment from Hélène (Marie-Françoise) Daigneault, February 19, 2016

  • As the Canadian confederation was still years away, it would be more accurate to state that Zacharie lived and died in Nouvelle-France. The entity of Canada began taking shape at the Treaty of Utrecht, when Nouvelle-France passed to the British and Haut-Canada and Bas-Canada were established.
  • Reply: There is nothing that would please me more than to use the historical names of the country that is Canada today. As you say, until 1763, it would be "Nouvelle-France" etc. (and then later there would be "Upper-Canada" and "Lower-Canada" etc., until 1867, when "Canada" became Canada). However, this suggestion caused insolvable objections from many, many users. The back-and-forth was brutal. Ultimately, a standard was agreed on. I documented this standard here: Directory of Locations in Québec, Canada. It may not be totally satisfactory to you (I am on your side), still at the end, we believe that consistency across all profiles from the early days of Canada would be preferable. morel
