Names

A person’s birth surname should be entered in the “Birth Name” field & surname changes that occurred after the birth surname, should be entered in the “Last Name / Surname” field (Note: historically in Croatia the majority of women changed their surname when they married)
Do not fill in the “Display Name” field
Name Preference Settings can be used to change how names are displayed to your personal preference.
Please populate default name fields, do not leave them empty

rotating_world.gif Geni has option to record names in multiple languages, we call it multilingual name fields - please use them. Geni has decided to have English version of the name as default, that is the fact. As many of the Croatian names are entered in different languages, please add those versions . As well as entering Croatian version of the name, if the person does not already have English version of their name, please add Croatian version in the default (English) field as this helps with search engine. Please do not use / as it interferes with GEDCOM creation. Please do not remove another language version of the name entered by somebody else - just add your version in your language.

For example For people that have changed their surname during their lifetime (for example, after immigrating to an English speaking country, please write both spellings as follows:

  • English - Joe Grubisich,
  • Croatian - Joze Grubišić
  • Italian - Giuseppe Grubissich

Title

Title should not be used for generic description such as mother, father, Mr, Mrs, Gdin, Gda
It is designed for titular titles.

First name

Croatians do not use middle names. If a person has more then one name, it should all go in the first name field.
This also helps with Geni search engine as it looks at the first name field only.

Surnames:

Surnames should be written as they appear in Croatian (phonetically with proper Croatian accents). If you do not have a Croatian keyboard, please copy the accented letters here and paste in the name field or leave it for later

Č č Ć ć Đ đ Š š Ž ž

If you have a version of a surname from old church books written differently, please write this version under ‘nicknames’ or ‘about me’.

Many families used to have clan name added to their surname to distinguish different clans within the greater family. If the clan or a second family surname is known, it needs to be recorded. For example: Marko Staničić Barbaresko is different from Marko Staničić Buzolić.

Birth Surname:

It refers to a surname a person had when he/she was born. It used to be referred to as a "Maiden surname" for women, and birth surname for men.
In Croatia, women used to take their husband’s surname when they marry.

Please enter a woman’s birth surname if known, otherwise use a question mark (?) in the Birth surname box. We do this because it is easier to see if anyone has a duplicate elsewhere. For example, you may have the family information about a woman before she was married, and someone else may only have her married name. Also, using a question mark it is easier to identify if someone is married or remained single. If women married multiple times her last husbands surname goes into the Surname field.

example Marija Horvat married Petar Zec first and then Josip Kozina, her name should be written as Marija Kozina (Zer r. Horvat)

Display name:

Since the introduction of multilingual fields, this field should only be used if the person used completely different name, such as as the stage name or similar.

All nicknames go here

Date of Birth:

If the exact birth date is not known, calculate approx 30 years from the previous or next generation for men and 25 years for women, and click the box “circa”. This is to avoid merging the wrong people that might have the same first name and surname and parents with the same or similar names but are of different generations.

Location data

Geni uses geo location. It helps users locate where their ancestors came from. If you use things like Makarska, Austro-Ugarska, or Makarska, Otomansko carstvo, nobody will be able to find it. While the name of the country might have been correct at the time, Geni does not have timeline for places. You can record this in the About me field.

All geographic locations should refer to the current Croatian borders, not historical borders. Do not enter Yugoslavia, Austria, Austro-Hungary, Italy, etc.

Also, if you know where someone has died, but not the cemetery name, add the village, town or city names followed by the country, or at the least, the name of the country. The site section under maps records the birth location, as well as, the current location of all family members, but for deceased members it records only the place of burial as a final location, not the place of death.

Birth Location, Death Location

If you do not know the exact town, village or city but you do know the country of birth, please enter the country, for example, Croatia, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, etc. This program has statistical charts and graphs that track birth and death locations by country. These charts can only be accurate if this information is added.

Date of Death:

If it is known that the person died young but you do not know the date, add the picture ‘died young’ to the profile. This way if some one else has the death date, they will know to add it, otherwise, some one might just think that the death date is unknown, or they are still alive.

Unos podataka

Ako nemate odgovarajucu tastaturu evo znakova ovdje I

Č č Ć ć Đ đ Š š Ž ž

English - Joe Grubisich,
Croatian - Joze Grubišić
Italian - Giuseppe Grubishich

Osobno Ime

Ime osobe treba upisati u prvo polje.

Mjesto rodjenja, smrti:

Ako ne znate tocno mjesto, uvijek unesite bar zemlju. Npr, Croatia/Hrvatska, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, etc.

Javni i privatni profili:
