While it is up to you if you want your profile to be public or private, please make any of the profiles you enter for all living people private. We recommend that all profiles of people born more than 100 years ago should be public to help other family members build their trees.

It is not typical for Croatians to have middle names. If a person has more then one name, please place it after the first name in the first name field. This is done to help identify different family members with the same first and last name. Also, Geni search engine looks at the first name field only.
Surnames should be written as they appear in Croatian (phonetically with proper Croatian accents). If you do not have a Croatian keyboard, please copy the accented letters here and paste in the name field.
Č č Ć ć Đ đ Š š Ž ž
If you have a version of a surname from old church books written differently, please write this version under ‘nicknames’ or ‘about me’.
For people that have changed their surname during their lifetime (for example, after immigrating to an English speaking country, please write both spellings as follows:
Surname they were born with, then slash ‘/’, then the surname they use now or that they had when they died. For example: Joze/Joe Grubušić/Grubisich, Marko/Mark Ševelj/Sevegl, Mara/Mary Pivac/Pivach.
Along with two first names, many families used to have 2 surnames to distinguish the different clans within the greater family. If the second family surname is known, it needs to be recorded. For example: Marko Staničić Barbaresko is different from Marko Staničić Buzolić.
In Croatia, women take their husband’s surname when they marry. Always enter a woman’s maiden name if known, otherwise use a question mark (?) in the maiden name box. We do this because it is easier to see if anyone is a duplicate elsewhere. For example, you may have the family information about a woman before she was married, and someone else may have only her married name and maiden name through her spouse’s tree. Through the maiden name, we can merge duplicates and find new branches of the bigger tree. Also, through the maiden name or a question mark it is easier at a glance to identify if some one is married or remained single.
For men, first and middle names followed by the family surname. As noted above, if they changed their names, use this example: Joze/Joe Marko Grubušić/Grubisich.
For single women, first and middle names followed by the family surname. For example Mara Ivana Sundić.
For married women, first and middle names, husband’s surname followed by her maiden name in brackets, for example, Mara Ivana Sundić (?) or Mara Ivana Sundić (Nola). As noted above, if they emigrated elsewhere and their names were changed use this example, Mara/Mary Ivana/Yvonne Sundić/Sundich (Nola).
If the exact birth date is not known, calculate approx 30 years from the previous or next generation for men and 25 years for women, and click the box “circa”. This is to avoid merging the wrong people that might have the same first name and surname and parents with the same or similar names but are of different generations.
If you do not know the exact town, village or city but you do know the country of birth, ALWAYS enter the country, for example, Croatia, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, etc. This program has statistical charts and graphs that track birth and death locations by country. These charts can only be accurate if this information is added.
If it is known that the person died young but you do not know the date, add the picture ‘died young’ to the profile. This way if some one else has the death date, they will know to add it, otherwise, some one might just think that the death date is unknown, or they are still alive.
If you do not know the exact town, village or city but you do know the country where they died, ALWAYS enter the country, for example, Croatia, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, etc. This program has statistical charts and graphs that track birth and death locations by country. These charts can only be accurate if this information is added.
All geographic locations should refer to the current Croatian borders, not historical borders. Do not enter Yugoslavia, Austria, Austro-Hungary, Italy, etc. Historical accuracy in terms of what current Croatia used to be called is a sensitive issue to most Croatians, as the country has had numerous rulers from other parts of the world, as well as many border changes.
Also, simply add the country name in English. Again for statistical reasons, this site does not recognize all the names in the different languages for Croatia so on the charts it will separate all the spellings of Croatia as different countries, thereby not really giving us an accurate chart reading of birth and death locations.
Also, if you know where some one has died, but not the cemetery name, add the village, town or city names followed by the country, or at the least, the name of the country. The site section under maps records the birth location, as well as, the current location of all family members, but for deceased members it records only the place of burial as a final location, not the place of death.
