Jewish Paratroopers of British Mandate Palestine were a group of 250 Jewish men and women in Mandate Palestine who volunteered to join the British army and parachute into German-occupied Europe between 1943 and 1945. Their mission was to organize resistance to the Germans and aid in the rescue of Allied personnel.

History

Of the 250 original volunteers, 110 underwent training. Thirty-two eventually parachuted into Europe and five infiltrated the target countries by other routes. Most of those selected for training were emigres from Europe, with intimate knowledge of the countries to which they would be sent. Three of the paratroopers infiltrated Hungary, five participated in the Slovak National Uprising in October 1944, and six operated in northern Italy. Ten paratroopers served with British liaison missions to the Yugoslav partisans. Nine paratroopers operated in Romania. Two others entered Bulgaria, and one each operated in France and Austria.

The Germans captured 12 and executed 7 of the 37 paratroopers sent into occupied Europe (see their names below). Three of those executed were captured in Slovakia. Two were captured in Hungary and one in northern Italy. After 7 missions the paratrooper who entered France was captured and killed.

Hannah Szenes, one of the best-known of the paratroopers, was seized in German-occupied Hungary and executed in Budapest on November 7, 1944, at the age of 23. Szenes was a talented poet and her songs are still sung in Israel.

After the war, remains of three of the seven paratroopers killed in the war, including Szenes, were interred on Mount Herzl cemetery in Jerusalem. Memorials for the other four are also at Mount Herzl Cemetery.

צנחני היישוב הוא כינויה של קבוצה של 37 צנחנים שהתארגנה ביישוב העברי בארץ ישראל במסגרת התנדבות היישוב לצבא הבריטי במלחמת העולם השנייה. 32 מתוכם הוצנחו על ידי הבריטים באירופה הכבושה בידי גרמניה הנאצית כדי לסייע במאמץ המלחמתי הבריטי, ועוד חמישה הסתננו ליעדם בדרכי היבשה והים.

קבוצת השלושים ושבעה נבחרה לאחר תהליך מיון בו לקחו חלק 240 מתנדבים, שמתוכם נבחרו 110 שנשלחו לאימונים. מטרתם מבחינת הבריטים הייתה השגת מידע מודיעיני ומעבר לכך, הצנחתם הייתה חלק ממאמץ ההטעיה הגדול שנועד לשכנע את גרמניה הנאצית שהפלישה של בעלות הברית תבוא מכיוון דרום אירופה. מצד הנהגת היישוב (הסוכנות היהודית), פעולות אלה היו ניסיון לפעול להצלת יהודים באירופה, ובעיקר לחדש את הקשר עימם

ארבעה מהצנחנים נספו ב-29 ביולי 1954 באסון מעגן: דב הררי, אריה אורני, יהודה אחישר ושלום פינצי. באירוע נספה גם דניאל סרני, בנו של אנצו, ועופרה, אשתו ההרה של דניאל

ביום 29.7.1954 הוכתה ישראל כולה בתדהמה על האסון המחריד בקיבוץ מעגן שלחוף הכנרת, שבו נהרגו 17 איש ונפצעו יותר מ- 25, כאשר מטוס קל נפל לתוך קהל המוזמנים לטכס גילוי אנדרטה לזכרו של הצנחן פרץ גולדשטיין שנרצח במחנה הריכוז אורניינבורג. בין ההרוגים היו 4 צנחנים שהיו יחד עמו בשליחות ההצלה וחזרו בשלום. והם: סגן אלוף דב הררי (ברגר), אריה אורני (פיכמן), אריה אחישר (גוקובסקי), ושלום פינצי. בנוסף לכך נספה גם בנו היחיד של אנצו סרני, וכן קצין הצנחנים ומדריך הצניחה הוותיק שמחה לוי.
מטוס פייפר של "קלוב התעופה לישראל" שטייסו היה אורי גלין, מדריך טיסה בחברה, היה צריך להצניח איגרת ברכה ממטוסו לעבר מקום שסומן לו ליד האנדרטה. האגרת נתפסה בגלגל המטוס. הטייס גלין חילץ אותה ומיד לאחר מכן צלל לתוך הקהל, ונשרף כליל.
