Rye is the home of the architect Sir Reginald Blomfield who was responsible for three significant designs that commemorated WW1: The local hospital, the Cross of Sacrifice and The Menin Gate in Ypres. A bronze sword which hung in the hall of Sir Reginald Blomfield’s home in Rye became the inspiration for the town’s wartime memorial - the Cross of Sacrifice. The design was adopted by the Imperial War Graves Commission and widely used in Britain and abroad.

The main memorial cross in Rye stands in the Churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin overlooking the sea. It lists the names and initials of 145 men from the First War and 48 from the Second plus one from the Gulf War

The Sussex Imperial Yeomanry was formed in 1901 and a Troop was raised in Rye and district. It maintained very close connections with Rye until 1904 and some men saw service in the First World War. It then became the Surrey Yeomanry and was converted to the Field Artillery and served in the Second World War.

The Veteran Reserve was created early in 1911. It was later known as the National Reserve. A Rye Company was established and forty men served in the First World War.

When war broke out in 1914, 300 men from Rye had volunteered out of a population of 4,000; conscription was introduced in 1916.
