Workshop : "The Flemish on the Açores"

This project page is meant as a workshop focused exclusively on making available the Dutch-language research of André Claeys in English and Portuguese versions.

André Claeys is a Flemish amateur historian who spent over 10 years of his retirement years on researching the historical and genealogical links that tie the Azores islands with Flanders. Whereas most historians of the Portuguese-Azorean-Brazilian migration flows have focused on Portuguese-language records, André Claeys is probably the first and only researcher who went straight into the Dutch-language medieval records of his native Bruges (Belgium). By doing so, he was able to document specific genealogical ties that were previously unknown and unproven - reaching far back into the 15th century. Through his research, we get a better understanding of why the Azores have sometimes been called the "Flemish Islands" by the Portuguese colonizers themselves. In addition, André Claeys worked with Azorean and Brazilian contacts to connect the dots between Flemish ancestry and the Azores - and thus with potentially millions of descendants throughout the world.

Though there is still significant space for expansion of this research, the work of André Claeys is sufficiently groundbreaking that it warrants to become available to the widest audience possible - and hence in English and Portuguese versions. André's work is currently available in Dutch on the website of the Azorean government. In cooperation with the Regional Department of Archives in Angra do Heroismo, a new format for this research AND the English and Portuguese versions will become gradually available on that website.

The present project on Geni aims to show users how we are progressing, and it may invite users to participate in reviewing the material as and when it becomes available. In addition, it may provoke discussions that will spark additional interest in Azorean genealogy.

Below follows the tentative structure (and tentative titles) for the publication of André Claeys' work (please note that this currently diverges from what you can see on the Azorean website). Below this structure also follows a list of Geni projects that relate to Azorean genealogy.

Este projeto pretende ser uma oficina voltada exclusivamente para disponibilizar a pesquisa em língua holandesa de André Claeys, tanto em inglês como em português.
André Claeys é um historiador amador flamengo que passou mais de 10 anos de sua aposentadoria pesquisando as relações históricas e genealógicas que ligam as ilhas dos Açores com Flandres. Enquanto a maioria dos historiadores dos fluxos migratórios Portugal-Açores-Brasil se concentraram em registros em língua portuguesa, André Claeys é, provavelmente, o primeiro e único pesquisador que foi direto aos registros medievais em língua neerlandesa de sua nativa Bruges (Bélgica).
Ao fazer isso, ele foi capaz de documentar laços genealógicos específicos que antes eram desconhecidos ou não comprovados - remontando ao século 15. Através de sua pesquisa, é possível obter uma melhor compreensão de porque os Açores têm sido por vezes chamado de "ilhas flamengas" pelos próprios colonizadores portugueses. Além disso, André Claeys trabalhou com contatos açorianos e brasileiros de forma a “ligar os pontos” entre a ascendência flamenga e os Açores - e, portanto, com potencialmente milhões de descendentes em todo o mundo.
Embora ainda haja espaço significativo para a expansão desta pesquisa, o trabalho de André Claeys é suficientemente inovador para merecer se tornar disponível para o público mais amplo possível - e, para tanto, são necessárias versões em inglês e português. O trabalho de André está atualmente disponível em holandês no site do Governo dos Açores. Em cooperação com o Departamento Regional de Arquivos em Angra do Heroísmo, um novo formato para a pesquisa, como também as versões para o inglês e o português, se tornarão gradualmente disponíveis no site.
O presente projeto do Geni tem como objetivo mostrar aos usuários como estamos progredindo e, também, convidá-los a participar na revisão do material, como e quando ele se tornar disponível. Além disso, poderá provocar discussões que irão despertar o interesse adicional na genealogia açoriana.
