The name is correctly spelled as both McDonell and MacDonell (one 'n' and two 'l'). They were from the area of Glengarry, Scotland in the Highlands. The Clan MacDonell seat was originally located at Strome Castle (1539-1602) and then at Invergarry Castle on Loch Oich (1602-1746). In the years following the Scottish defeat by the English at the Battle of Culloden (16 Apr 1746), nearly the entire clan was deportedas part of the Highland Clearances to an area now known as Glengarry, Ontario, not far from the Quebec border.
