Emeline was the daughter of Archie and Peggy (Oxendine) Oxendine. On Oct. 2, 1877, Archie and Peggy Oxendine were among the twenty charter members of Burnt Swamp Baptist church. In January 1881, Burnt Swamp, Reedy Branch, and Magnolia Baptist churches organized the Burnt Swamp Association.

She married Huie "Dock" Oxendine.

Her brothers , William Daniel Oxendine and James B. Oxendine, are buried at Mt. Airy Baptist in Pembroke, NC. Her brother, Peter Oxendine, is also buried at Bear Swamp. Another brother, John Nelson Oxendine, is buried at the Oxendine Cemetery on Oak Grove Church Road in Lumberton, NC.

The following was taken from the Jun. 16, 1972 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:

Funeral for Mrs. Emeline Chavis, 95, who died Wednesday, will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. in Bear Swamp Baptist Church by the Rev. T. M. Swett, the Rev. Grady Cummings and the Rev. Jimmy Dial. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving is a son, Chester Oxendine of Rowland; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Oxendine of Route 1 Pembroke; her foster sons, John B. Chavis, Septer Chavis, Charncy Chavis and Walter Chavis of Pembroke; her foster daughters, Mrs. Leola Sampson Route 1 Pembroke and Mrs. Jennie Chavis of Route 1 Maxton; 38 grandchildren and 102 great grandchildren.

She married John Travis Sanderson on Jul. 25, 1909 in the Burnt Swamp section of Robeson County, North Carolina. She married Huie "Dock" Oxendine after the 1920 Federal Censu.
