Gustav Mahler (07 July 1860 – 18 May 1911).
The internationally celebrated Bohemian-born Austrian composer and conductor, Gustav Mahler, was best known during his lifetime as one of the leading orchestral and operatic conductors of his day. He has, since the mid-20th century, been acclaimed as among the most important of the late-Romantic/early-Modernist composers. Numerous aficianados of today esteem Mahler as equally eminent as Beethoven and Wagner. Although the fidgety, nervous-natured virtuoso's music was slow to be accepted by the musical establishment of Vienna, his music has caught fire, rendering a Mahler concert ticket to be "golden". Mahler is primarily recognized for his symphonies numbered pne - nine, as well as for his popular symphonic poem, "Das Lied von der Erde." His approach to genre often blurred the lines between German orchestral "lied" (songs), symphony and the symphonic poem; yet, Mahler's star continues to rise in the velvet evening sky. His Symphony No. Ten was left unfinished, when the artist/composer prematurely died at age 50 of heart disease.
