Isaiah was a Methodist.

1870 - McDonald Co Census - how could they be here with their family if they did not marry until around 1875 or 1877? Also supposed to be on Shoal Creek, Barry Co., MO Census - year not noted.

1875 - or

1877 - Isaiah's & Caroline Walker's marriage date may be one of these years. Until proven differently, I'll go with 1875 as this is what Norma Huff has. From writings of Albert Curtis Browning, date of marriage is said to be 1877. From newspaper at time of his death, date is recorded as 1875. Also, Albert Curtis may have been the third child and his dob is 1878

which makes the 1875 date more likely - Isaiah & Caroline's place of marriage is also questionable - Noel or Butler Creek

1880 - Elk River, McDonald, MO census reflects: Isaiah, 38 yrs & "Susan" (thought to be Caroline's nickname), 30 yrs. There is a Robert, 12 & Laura Prater, 8 (born in CA). Also, Bertie (Albert Curtis), 2.

1898 - about, according to Maud E Kirby, Isaiah sold the farm in Madge MO, 2 miles from Noel, and moved below Noel where the cave is located.

1910 - McDonald Co., MO Census - Isaiah was 67 & Caroline was 62. Appear with son, Arthur, 27; Mother, Sarah Starnes, 89; Brother, John Wesley, 65 (born AR); brother, Avery Benton, 61 (born - AR) - had a son (James Lewis) although never married the Mother, Etta.

1910 - Isaiah's mother, Sarah Jane Starnes or Starns Browning died in McDonald Co., MO, where she lived with him.

1914 - Isaiah's death day has been reported as the 17th and the 19th and the 9th of Nov. He was buried at Shelt-Noel Cemetery which is west of Pineville. A picture of the grave stone distinctly says Nov 9, 1914. His name is spelled incorrectly on the grave stone (Isih).

After the war, he lived 2 miles south of Noel until his death on a farm he purchased, the Frank Heath Farm on Butler Creek. McDonald Co. Did not find land records. But, I think what I was looking at was just purchases of federal land.

He and Caroline had 3 children of their own. Caroline, who was a widow, brought two children to the marriage. The oldest of Caroline & Isaiah's children was Bert, born or died at Cleora OK and buried at Shelt-Noel Cemetery. The second was Arthur. The youngest was Mrs. Mack McQuitty or McQuitly of Noel. Her first name was Sally. Notes from the 1880 McDonald Co. MO census lists Laura Prater(Laura was Caroline's daughter from her first marriage. Robert Prater was Caroline Walker Browning's son.

Notes from Kathleen Browning - Kathleen's mother thought highly of Isaiah - said he was a very kind and gentle man.

Isaiah is reported to have been 15 years of age when he went into the army during the Civil War.

According to Glenda Mitchell, Isaiah was perhaps the only Browning kid who did not go west to ID and MT.

He Fought valiantly for four years for the Confederate Cause, one which he believed to be right, when peace was declared he laid down his arms and accepted the Stars and Stripes as his flag and has since been one of its staunchest supporters. At the close of the war he settled in McDonald County. Several years ago he purchased the Frank Heath Farm on Butler Creek two miles south of Noel and live there until his death November 9, 1914. Browning, Bert Browning, Arthur Browning, Sallie McQuitty, Robt. Prater, Laura Caldwell.

MILITARY:

  • **From a letter by Kathleen Browning written to Norma Eleanor Browning Huff: "You asked if any of the family were in the Civil War - your great-grandfather (Isaiah) fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas which was the decisive battle of the Civil War. I'm sure that several of the other brothers fought there, too - in fact, the Civil War is the thing that brought the Brownings to this part of Missouri; Alexander & his family (this included Isaiah, Jeremiah, Wesley, Bent, Newt, Jim) had to leave north Missouri where they had a good farm, in a hurry, they expressed sympathy with the south and the people in the north were threatening them. Since I get started on this I remember Dad saying that Alexander and all his boys were in the Confederate Army except Wes who was a little rocky and he said that he would go out and kill a sheep instead - the old lady was a very religious woman - named all her sons with Bible names. Jerry was a spy for the south."

After the war, he lived 2 miles south of Noel until his death on a farm he purchased, the Frank Heath Farm on Butler Creek. McDonald Co. Did not find land records. But, I think what I was looking at was just purchases of federal land.
