About 1657 Joseph Alden married Mary Simmons, the daughter of Moses Simmons at Duxbury, Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts. The children of this marriage were Sarah, Isaac, Joseph, Mercy, Hopestill, Elizabeth, and John. Some sources assign an eighth child to this family, Mary Alden. So far, no contemporary seventeenth or eighteenth century sources have been cited for this child.[4] [3]

The 2002 edition of the Alden Silver Book specifically addresses the addition of a daughter named "Mary." The claim is that she was the wife of Samuel Allen, but Samuel's wife has been proven to be a different woman, named "Mary Pratt."[9]
