Newton Cannon (May 22, 1781 – September 16, 1841) was Governor of the U.S. state of Tennessee from 1835 to 1839.

Born in Guilford County, North Carolina, Cannon had been a merchant and a surveyor before he studied law. He was elected to the state legislature in 1811 and served as a colonel of volunteers in the Creek War. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1814 as a Democratic Republican, and was elected to a non-consecutive second term in 1819.

An opponent of the policies of Andrew Jackson, Cannon was the first member of the Whig Party to be elected to office in Tennessee as its governor. He became the first governor to benefit from the increased powers given the office by the state constitution of 1834. Cannon was re-elected to a second term as governor in 1837, but lost on his third try to a Jackson supporter, future President of the United States, U.S. Speaker of the House James K. Polk. Cannon died two years later at the age of 60.

Cannon County, Tennessee is named in his honor.

Newton Cannon (May 22, 1781 – September 16, 1841) was an American politician. He served as Governor of Tennessee from 1835 to 1839. He also served two terms in the United States House of Representatives, from 1814 to 1817, and from 1819 to 1823. Cannon was a long-time foe of Andrew Jackson, and spent much of his political career opposing Jacksonite policies.

Born in Guilford County, North Carolina, Cannon was the son of Minos Cannon, who served as a soldier in the Continental Army. The family moved to the area that later became Williamson County, Tennessee, around 1790.

Cannon received a common school education and tried several occupations as a young man, working as a saddler, merchant and surveyor, and undertaking the study of law, before eventually becoming a planter in Williamson County
