Notes for DR. ROBERT ELLYSON:

Dr Robert Ellyson was a trusted and prominent man in Colonial Virginia. He was one of the founders of York County. He was a high Sheriff of James City County; sergeant-at-arms of the House of Burgesses in 1657-58; a leading burgess in 1656, 1659-60. 1660-61, 1663, with the rank of Captain. (See William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine -- VI, page 227; Stanard, Colonial Virginia Register, pp. 72, 75, 77; same IX, p.65; Register of the land Office, Richmond, Virginia, Patent Book No. 7, p.22. Dr Robert Ellyson received as a legacy from his friend Dr Henry Waldron, a library of books -- one of the few in Virginia at that early date.

Robert Ellyson (Ellison) came to Maryland as "Barber Chirurgeon" before 1643 and after holding the office of high sheriff of St. Mary's county, emigrated to Jamestown, Va, where he was high sheriff of James City County and sergeant-at-arms of the house of burgesses in 1657-58, and a leading burgess in 1656, 1660, 1661, 1663, with the rank of captain. He left a daughter Hannah, who married Anthony Armistead, and a son Gerard Robert Ellyson. (Encyclopedia of Biography -- Virginia -- New York: Lewis Pub. Co., 1915, L.G.Tyler, Ed., p. 229)

Sharon Doliante Comments follow:

DR. ROBERT ELLYSON, b. Cl6l5-20, no doubt in England; d. 1671, in James City Co. (?), Virginia; probably m. in early 1650s, in Va., Elizabeth (___). We believed she might have been Elizabeth Soanes, daughter of Henry (Speaker of the House of Burgesses, in 1660) and Judith Soanes, Sr., until recently, when we discovered that she was alleged to have married John Peterson, of Charles City to. [Historical Southern Families, vol. 5, p. 88, by John Bennett Boddie.] Judith Soanes, "Jr.", daughter of the latter couple, m. (1) as his (2) wife, Henry Randolph and (2) Peter Field (and through this (2) m. was the great grand-mother of Thomas Jefferson). [Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia 1607-1625, by Annie Lash Jester and Martha Woodroof Hiden, p. 103, henceforth referred to simply as, Jester.] It was William Randolph, son of Henry Randolph and his (1) wife, Elizabeth, whom one Elizabeth Ellison sponsored, upon the occasion of his baptism, in 1658, in James City. (Judith Soanes eventually became the (2) wife, as stated supra, of Henry, and stepmother of Will-iam Randolph.) It is generally conceded that this Elizabeth was the wife of Dr. Robert Ellyson.

Dr. Ellyson first lived in Maryland for about four years, where he was a par-ticipating member of the community, but it was only after he removed to Virginia, that he really became politically active and prominent. We suspect this was due, at least in part, to an advantageous marriage, such as the one with the Soanes family would have been. He really was rather an amazing man, for he was all of the following, and sometimes simultaneously, physician (barber-surgeon), attorney, burgess, justice, twice high sheriff (in Md. and in Va.), sergeant at arms, militia officer, and member of a number of important legislative committees.

NOTE: He may also have served as a justice in Md., as the entry, infra, under date Jan. 1643, appears to speak of him as a member of the "Coram" (quorum), thus a leading justice.

We have found helpful, three articles concerning Dr. Ellyson - the first by Dr. Tyler, in Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, vol. 10, p. 32; the second, in Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, vol. 1, p. 229; and the third in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, vol. 72, No. 1, pp. 42-9, by Mr. Douglas W. Ellyson Wagner. Unfortunately, both Dr. Tyler and Mr. Wagner made errors in premise. Dr. Tyler, for instance, made the mistake of saying that there were two generations of Gerrard Robert Ellyson's, the first being the son of Dr. Robert (which was correct), and the latter the husband of Anne Myhill (which was not correct). Mr. Wagner, on the other hand, erred in stating 'It is generally assumed that Robert Ellyson married Elizabeth, the daughter of Dr. Thomas Gerrard." This last is easily disproved, as Elizabeth, daughter of Dr. Gerrard, m. May 6, 1659, in Maryland, Nehemiah Blackstone, who died 1693 [Liber A.B.H., p. 193, Hall of Records, Annapolis]. In a letter to this compiler, from Mr. Wagner, dated Brooklyn, N.Y., Mar. 22, 1966, he also told us he was convinced that Gerrard Robert Ellyson, son of Dr. Robert, had two wives simultaneously, Sarah ( _____ ), and Anne Myhill.

In an attempt to untangle this family once and for all, we engaged the services of Mr. John Frederick Dorman, well known genealogist, and editor and publisher of The Virginia Genealogist. Mr. Dorman eventually reported to us he was convinced that Gerrard R., son of Dr. Robert, had one wife only, Sarah (___), and it seemed perfectly clear to him that Anne Myhill's Ellyson husband, was a brother to Gerrard R., but he had failed to discover- this mans name. Mr. Dorman also disagreed with anoth-er aspect of Mr. Wagner s letter to us, in which he stated that Frances Moody was a daughter. to Gerrard Ellyson, son of Anne Myhill Ellyson, and that her child-ren, by a husband who deserted her, assumed the surname of their grandfather. Mr. Dorman states in his report, it is quite obvious after reading the will of Gerrard Ellyson, that Frances Moody was not Gerrard's dau., and her children were also his, in spite of the fact he also had a living wife, who indeed survived him. Frances Moody's children did, however, assume their father's sur-name, in later life.

It seems highly probable that either Dr. Robert Ellyson or his wife, had some Gerrard ancestry, since they gave that name to their son, but there is no ap-parent connection with the prominent Dr. Thomas Gerrard, a Roman Catholic, in spite of the fact that he lived in St. Mary's Co., Md. at the same time as Dr. Ellyson. The former later removed to Westmoreland Co., Va. The only alternative would seem to be that Robert Ellyson named his son for Dr. Gerrard, simply because he greatly admired him, but this seems a bit farfetched to us.

Mr. Wagner, in his article, stated unequivocally, that Dr. Robert Ellyson was descended from "Robert Ellyson (no dates given) of Hakwell in Northumberland (England), and a member of one of Newcastle-upon-Tyne's most distinguished merchant families". He also stated that Dr. Robert Ellyson was probably "descended from one of Cuthbert Ellyson's grand children". Cuthbert, he said, (who d. C1563), was the founder of the Ellyson family, of Newcastle. However, Mr. Wagner neglected to document his source for Dr. Robert's alleged descent from these men.

Following are abstracts of records we've found concerning Dr. Ellyson.

Ray Leggitt's Comments follow:

There is considerable confusion as to whom Robert Ellyson married. The LDS Ancestral File indicates he married Susanna Gerrard. However, as explained in her notes, it is quite apparent that she married Robert Slye.

Tidewater Virginia Families, by Virginia Lee Hutchenson Davis further contributes to this confusion. That text says: There does not appear to be any conclusive evidence as to whom Robert Ellyson married. Most of the printed accounts state that it is generally assumed that he married Elizabeth, the daughter of Dr. Thomas Gerrard. However, Dr. Thomas Gerrard did not mention a daughter, Elizabeth, in his will, nor did he name an Ellyson grandchild. Elizabeth Gerrard was named as a headright when Thomas took up land in Maryland, she was not named as a headright when he patented land in Virginia.

A printed account of the Gerrard family lists the names of Dr. Gerrard's children: Justinian (the oldest), Thomas, Susanna, Anne, Frances, Temperance, Elizabeth, Jane, John, and Mary (see Governor Garrard of Kentucky, 1962, pp. 184-185). However, the William and Mary College Quarterly - Washington and his Neighbors does not include an Elizabeth.

Maryland and Virginia Colonials by Sharon J. Doliante, indicates the wife was Elizabeth ____ who until recently was thought to be Elizabeth Soanes, daughter of Henry (Speaker of the House of Burgesses, in 1660). However, this Elizabeth now appears to have married John Peterson, of Charles City Co.

For now, I will assume that either Susanna or Elizabeth Gerrard is the wife of Robert Ellyson. This is simply based on the fact that Robert's first male child is named Gerrard Ellyson and the naming convention of the time would indicate he was named after the maternal grandfather

Notes for SUSANNAH GERARD:

There is some question as to whether this is the wife of Captain Robert Ellyson. The Founders of the Maryland Legislature 1635-1789 indicate that this Susannah first married Robert Slye and second John Coode. The William and Mary College Quarterly - Washington and his Neighbors indicates she married Robert Slye, Esq., of the Maryland Council. See the notes for Robert Ellyson for a more detailed discussion.

Here is a fairly authoritative discussion of the issue by Barbara Petty:

Subject: ELLYSON/GERRARD

From: Barbara Petty

Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 06:55:24 -0800

Hello ELLYSON cousins.

Interesting conversation about Robert ELLYSON's wife being possibly a daughter of Thomas GERRARD. To add to the pot, I wrote to Sharon Doliante, compiler of Mary and Virginia Colonials about this and she sent me a copy of a letter from Br. Ambrose Carroll Moorman of St. Benedict, OR dated Jan. 31, 1992 to Ms. Doliante. In this letter he said the following:

"Dr. Lorand V. Johnson, M.D. now deceased of Cleveland, Ohio wrote several books on the Johnson family and in 1976 he assured me that Sue Terrel of Rockcastle Farm, Lynchburg, Virginia had the old family bible of the SLYE family. Elizabeth Gerrard's sister, Susannah GERRARD, married by 1683, Robert SLYE (ca. 1628-1670/1) by whom she had four children as her first husband. At any rate the original SLYE family bible reads: Baptized on ye 1st day of December, 1666 A.D., Thomas, infant son of Robert and Susanna Slye. The sponsor's being his uncle Justinian GERRARD and aunt Elizabeth ELLYSON.'

"Now the only other aunt Elizabeth' that this child could have had was his father's sister, Elizabeth Russell of Lond, England.' It seems that this information came from his will written on January 18 and entered for probate on March 13, 1670/1. This information comes from: A Biographical Dictionary of the Maryland Legislature, 1615-1789 Vol. II, p. 739, which was published using the documents of the MD Hall of Records.

(some omitted)

"The information from the SLYE bible was given to Dr. Johnson by Mrs. Wirt, who for about 50 years was a frequent contributor to genealogical magazines and he presumed that she had copied this out of Sue Terrel's bible. All three were acquaintances. I have not checked it for the purpose of this letter, but Sue Terrel, like myself was part of the larger CLARK-MOORMAN-ELLYSON-JOHNSON connection and also had the family bible of Capt. Christopher CLARK. I have also an original document involving the GERRARD- WASHINGTON marriage, which was passed down to me. Without looking into my note I think Thomas GERRARD did have a sister

Elizabeth in England. There was another GERRARD family in Virginia and I have checked into it to what possibilities it may have had and there are none. The family may have been either from a brother or 1st cousin of Thomas GERRARD. Among Thomas GERRARD's children there is also a JOHNSON connection as there is in the WASHINGTON family, but nothing is certain about it."

As a point of interest - an obscure genealogy: A South Carolina Family: Mills-Smith and Related Lines by Laurens Tenney Mills with addenda by Lilla Mills Hawes and Sarah Mills Norton (1960) gives the following (on p. 10) found in an old family Bible which was entered just after the American Revolution by Mrs. Elizabeth Allison (Ellyson) Erwin (Irvin). The record was copied in 1958 from a record obtained from Miss Julia Ervin, Rt. 3, Darlington, S.C. This genealogy states:

"This Bible (printed in London by Robt. Barker, 1613) has no section for births, marriages, deaths, but she used blank page to record the following:

My father, Robert Allison, passed 1772 (the name during long years has been/spelt, Allyson, Ellison, Elison, Allison, etc.) My mother was Mary Lide or Lloyd,/ (drt. to Robt. Lloyd from Wales to Penn. abt 1683.) My grparents were John Allison/and Elizabeth Matthews of Va. He being son of Robt and Ann Myhill. He being son of/Capt. Robt. Allison & Hannah Gerard of Maryland & Va. He being son of Robt Allison/& Sarah Spence of V. He Being son of - John Allison, Ellyson b. Windyedge county/Lanark, Scotland, who marr'd with Ellin Hamilton & came to Va. in early days bef./1625. The first ones of our family lived in Va. & Maryland/'

She then lists her immediate family (brothers and sisters and offspring) and at the end states that "Elizabeth, myself, M. 1744 John Ervin Sr. Our offspring - Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah,/James, Robert, John, Mary, Jeane, Hugh and two died young. Both my husband and myself gave gratefully our time & services to our County at/beginning of Great Struggle for Independence. I nursed the Sick and John was Commissary/ Assembling Medicines & Equipments. He never lived to see Victory, but I did." Ms. Doliante thought it "extraordinary that the person who wrote the Bible record, should have known so many generations of their family! I find today that most folks only know their father & possibly their grandfather! Especially males!"

However, if you check the early records of Va. you'll find for example in The Original Lists of Persons of Quality 1600-1700 by John Camden Hotten (repr. Genealogy Pub. Co. 1974) that on "A List of Names; of the Living in Virginia February the 16 1623," "At Archurs hoop (Archer's Hope)" there lived a John ELISON and ux ELISON and a Child (not named). Living "in James iland (James Island?)" lived William SPENCE and ux SPENCE, infans SPENCE and Sara SPENCE.

Since Doliante listed a daughter for Ellyson named Hannah, it might be that Mrs. Ervin's memory might indeed have failed her somewhat and perhaps she confused in her memory the name of the sister of Robert ELLYSON for the name of the mother? My husband's own Ulster Scot family in NC was able to give me good start on his lineage taking the line back several generations (at least three) from their own. I think that Mrs. Ervin realized that she had lived through a monumentally historic era in this country and wanted to record her family for all her posterity. The Bible surely still exists somewhere, but where it is isn't presently known. One cousin speculated that it might be in the possession of the Sen. Sam Irvin family. There is a collection of his records in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill. The Mills-Smith genealogy can be found at the South Caroliniana Lib. in Columbia, SC and

a xeroxed copy has now been placed in the Library of Virginia.

I don't know how much credence we can give to this (probably not a lot), but he states that Gerrard Robert ELLYSON, son of Gerrard Robert ELLYSON who m. Anne, dau. of John MYHILL of Elizabeth City Co, moved to Chesterfield Co. where his will was proved in 1770. He named his three nephews, Gerrard, Robert and Thomas. It was his widow, who was the "sprightly old tit" aged 85 with three thousand pounds who m. Mr. William CARTER aged 23, son of Mr. John CARTER. It also states that Sarah was sister of Hon. John CLOPTON. Thomas ELLYSON, who lived in Chesterfield Co. was the father of the three nephews who were named in the will of their uncle, Gerrard ELLYSON in 1770. "The late Hon. J. Taylor ELLYSON, Lt. Governor of Virginia, descends from William ELLYSON, who had a son, Onana, who was father of Henry K. ELLYSON (1823 - ) who was the father of J. Taylor and William ELLYSON of Richmond." This looks a little confused.

By the way, in the records of Henrico MM, on p. 177 under the name GARTRITE (also at times spelled GARHITE or GARITE or GARTRIGHT in the records), a Judith GARTHRIGHT testified on 1749/50, 12, 16 in the case arising from a dispute concerning the estate of Gerard Robert ELLYSON. THOMAS ALLISON, b. March 03, 1636/37, Virginia; d. 1680; m. MARY ROBERTS, September 18, 1662, England

Robert was probably born in Scotland about 1615. There is no date for his arrival and he did not appear in the ship's list with John or Ellin. This, however, does not pose a real problem since the lists kept on most ships were not that accurate.

Robert Ellyson was in the Maryland Colony at least by 1642. He was listed in the levy of St. Mary's Hundred of August 2, 1642, when he was assessed thirty pounds of tobacco. He must have lived in St. Mary's County, and also oned land in Kent County, for that same year he was listed as an absent freeman of Kent. It had become a county that year and Robert's land was likely on the Island of Kent.

Robert was practicing as a chirugeon and physician at that time, with patients on Kent Island. He was involved in the Provincial Court with several patients who had not paid their bills. One of his delinquent accounts belonged to Sir Edmond Ployden who had engaged him to tend two of his maid servants. The entry in the court records read:

'Robert Ellyson, barber-chirugeon, demandeth of Sir Edmond Ployden, Kent, 1156 pounds tobacco due by account of chirugeny and physick this last summer for Ellen and Jane Stevenson, maidservants of the said Sir Edmond.

Added to Robert's responsibilities were those of sheriff of St. Mary's County, but he held office only briefly. He did investigate a case of high treason against Captain Ingle who had 'Spoken scandalous words against Prince Rupert.' Ingle was arrested, escaped and led a rebellion in which St. Mary's City was sacked and the governor forced to flee. Fortunately for Robert, he was not the sheriff at the time of the rebellion.

What drew Robert Ellyson to Maryland is not known, nor what then caused him to resettle in Virginia as he did not seem to be involved in the religious controversy. He was in Maryland as late as February 1644, but was in York County, Virginia, by 1646, when he was listed as a lowyer there.

Dr. Ellyson became active in the affairs of the county, and may have helped settle several estates. At a court held in January 1646, he was allowed to satisfy his claim for 1030 pounds of tobacco out of the estate of Robert Jackson. Apparently had more than one place of residence, as he was found in both James City County and Gloucester County, later.

He was elected a burgess from James City in 1656, he was addressed as Lieutenant Colonel Ellyson and was listed among the justice of the Gloucester County Court, while the following year he served as a justice in James City County. During his terms he was appointed a member of the committee for the levy and later, on the committee for private causes which dealt with suits appealed from the General Court of the Assembly. He served at one time as sergeant-at-arms for the General Assembly, and was also the high sheriff of James City County.

He was referred to variously as Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, though not necessarily in correct rank sequence. He must have certainly served in the militia, as the military titles were not generally used without authority. During the period of Dr. Ellyson's service to the colony, he seemed to have continued in his practice of medicine, occasionally.

Dr. Robert Ellyson testified that he treated Fortune Perkins, who came to him sorely bruised in his body about the arms and sides, and one of his shoulders dislocated. His shoulder was reduced by Dr. Ellyson and
he stated that he did not know how Perkins came by his injuries (August 1661). The entry in the court record described the confrontation in detail. Mr. Perkins had been beaten up by Benjamin Rucker, with the crowd that gathered shouting, "Beat out his eyes and do not let him breathe."

Robert was one of those appointed, in 1660, to a committee of the Council and Assembly to make plans to build a

  5. Note:

John Allison of Windyedge in Avondale, County Lanark, a follower and companion

of Sir Robert Hamilton, married Ellin Hamilton and named his eldest son

Robert for Sir Robert Hamilton. The two families were associated in

Maryland, Virginia and South Carolina. John Hamilton petitioned for

200,000 acres in South Carolina on which he was to settle a colony. It

was John Hamilton's grandfather who was one of the most important leaders

of the migration of Scots to Ireland.

John arrived in America in 1622/23 on the ship Prosperous from Windyedge,

Lanark, Scotland. After arriving in America John and Ellin lived at

Archers Hope Virginia

On May 12, 1607 the Jamestowne English explorers stopped at the Kingsmill

area and determined that the area, first called Archer's Hope, was a very

attractive site for a colony. "The Kingsmill area was a particularly good

piece of property with an abundance of the necessities for agricultural

development: good and fruitful soil, timber, wild game and a topography

that could be fortified with but little labor." 12 The only thing that

kept Kingsmill from being chosen as the settlement site was the shallow

water in the James river at this point. Jamestowne Island four (4) miles

upstream from Kingsmill was found about five (5) days later and provided

a place where ships could be moored to the trees on the island allowing

the ships to ride close to land. For this reason Jamestowne Island not

Kingsmill became the original Virginia settlement.

The ships now stood into those waters which we call Hampton Roads.

Finding a good channel and taking heart therefrom, they name a horn of

land Point Comfort. Now we call it Old Point Comfort. Presently they

began to go up a great river which they christened the James. To English

eyes it was a river hugely wide. they went slowly, with pauses and

waitings and adventures. they consulted their paper of instructions; they

scanned the shore for good places for their fort, for their town. It was

May, and all the rich banks were in bloom. It seemed a sweet-scented

world of promise. They saw Indians, but had with these no untoward

encounters. Upon the twelfth of May they came to a point of land which

they named Archer's Hope. Landing here, they saw "many squirels, conies,

Black Birds of divers and sundrie colours of crimson, watchet, Yellow,

Greene, Murry, and of divers other hewes naturally without any art using.

. .store of Turkie nests and many Egges." They liked this place, but for

shoal water the ships could not come near to land. So on they went, eight

nights up the river.

Samuel Argall, Esquire, "principal Governor of Virginia," set the

boundaries of Jamestown by proclamation on 28 March 1619 to include the

whole island, with part of the main land lying on the east side of Argall

Town adjoining the island, "also the neck of land on the north part, and

so to the further part of Archer's Hope; also Hog Island; and from thence

to the four mile Tree on the south, usually called by the name of

Tappahannock." All settlers within these boundaries were considered

members of the corporation and parish of Jamestown.

Archer's Hope, at the mouth of College Creek [Landing] near Jamestown.

WILLIAMSBURG (78 to 84 alt., 3,778 pop.), capital of Virginia from 1699

to 1780 and now the showplace among Colonial restorations, is spread upon

a ridge in the peninsula between the James and York Rivers. Queen's Creek

and College Creek (called in early days Archer's Hope) partly encircle

the city.

In Virginia around 1630 the idea was proposed to build a palisade across

the Peninsula for protection against the Indians. Dr. John Potts donated

a portion of his land behind Archer's Hope and the palisade (a ditch and

a berm - a symbolic fence) was built across the ridge between Archer's

Hope Creek, which flowed into the James and Queens Creek, which flowed

into the York. The settlers were given incentives to build their homes

along the palisade to act as watches. The settlement became known as the

"Middle Plantation" and later Williamsburg.

This note was found in The History of the Alison or Allison Family in

Europe and America, BOSTON, MASS.:PUBLISHED BY DAMRELL & UPHAM,THE OLD

CORNER BOOK-STORE.1893. The history of the Alisons now becomes

transferred from Cairnduff to Windyedge, which was one of the farms

belonging to the original estate of Cairnduff. Windyedge, in Avondale.

County Lanark inoluded then the farms of Windyedge, Couplaw, Heuk, and

Heuklaw, all of which in 1893 belong to Alisons, together with the farms

of Muirhead, Letham, and Blackmoss. It was there that Sir Robert

Hamilton, Balfour of Burleigh, Hackstone of Rathellet, Brownlee of

Torfoot, and several others met after the victory of Drumclog, to consult

as to their future procedure. It was then that they resolved to continue

the fortunes of war, which ended in their sad discomfiture at the battle

of Bothwell Bridge. Annie Swan in one of her novels called 'Adam

Hepburn's Vow,' alludes to Windyedge as their place of meeting, and in

'Old Mortality,' by Sir Walter Scott, we find that it was there that

Graham of Claverhouse obtained refreshments as he fled from his defeat at

Drumclog, and received them, too, from a widow who had three sons engaged

in the battle. In the account given of the engagement at Drumclog,

Archibald Alison is mentioned by name, the same that was seized as a

prisoner at Airsmoss, and suffered martyrdom at the Grass Market in

Edinburgh, and whose dying testimony is recorded at great length in the

volume called 'The Cloud of Witnesses.'
