Disputed Origins & Spouse

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Unknown-608488

Some, without source, claim that her parents were Richard Jenynges and Mary Channon, and that her first husband was Engelbert Pieters Lott. There is no known source for these claims and they are disputed.

Biography

Updated 23 August 2023

Sarah (___) was born in about 1604 in England, most likely in Cambridgeshire, based on the location of her 1635 marriage.[1][2]

She married first (___) Lott, before 1630, most likely in Cambridgeshire. They had at least one child together, and her first husband died before 1635.[3]

The widow Sarah Lott married second Adam Mott on 11 May 1635 at Horseheath, Cambridgeshire, England.[4]

"Uxor" Sarah Mott emigrated with her husband Adam Mott on the ship "Defense" (1635) and children Mary Lott, daughter by previous marriage, and four step-children: Joseph, Adam, Jonathon, and Elizabeth.

The Defence sailed from London about the last of July 1635, and arrived at Boston on 8 October 1635.[1][2]

They resided first in Roxbury, removing to Hingham in 1636 and then to Portsmouth in 1638.[5]

She was named by Adam in his will, made on 2 April 1661 in Portsmouth. Sarah was named executrix of Adam's estate on 31 August 1661.[6]

Notes

  1. there is an Engelbart Lott who emigrated from a point near the Lotte River (this is speculation by Phillips) with his two sons Pieter (born 1626) and Engelbartsen "Bartel" (born about 1630) established the Lott family in America. The Lott's were French Huguenots from Reynerwout in Drenten, Holland. They immigrated to Nieuw Amsterdam in 1652. Pieter Lott settled in Flatbush and married Gertrude Lamberts; together they had nine children. See http://lotthouse.org/history.html
  2. Another Adam Mott came to Newbury, Mass., and later migrated to Long Island. In the shipping list in 1638 he was aged 19 years, and in his will in 1681 he called himself aged about 60. At his marriage to his first wife, Jane Hallet, in 1647, the Dutch Church records of New Amsterdam enter him as from Essez County. This Adam Mott had children by his first wife named James, Grace, Henry, John, Joseph and Gershom.  See http://webpages.charter.net/treinhardt/surnames/mott/tmg35.html
  3. Adam Mott married (2) in Horseheath, Cambridge, England, 11 May 1635, widow Sarah Lott. They came from Horseheath, Cambridge to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 on the "Defence" (on 2 July 1635, "a tailor, Adam Mott," aged 39, "uxor Sara Mott," aged 31, and "children," "Jo[hn] Mott," aged 14, "Adam Mott," aged 12, "Jonathan Mott," aged 9, "Elizabeth Mott," aged 6, and "Mary Mott," aged 4, with a certificate of conformity from the minister at Cambridge, were enrolled at London as passengers for New England on the Defence). First settled in Roxbury; moved to Hingham in 1636, & Portsmouth in 1638. They had 3 children: Jacob, Gershom, & Eleazer.
  4. The passenger list for Adam Mott includes daughter "Mary Mott," aged 4. Austin noted that this passenger was actually "Mary Lott . by his second wife's former husband." The parish register of Clare, Suffolk, includes the baptism on 22 October 1630 of Mary Lott, daughter of Jeremy, on 22 October 1630, a possible candidate for this stepdaughter. The will of Adam Mott includes no mention of a daughter Mary.
