Notes

From the "Smoky Mountain Historical SocityNewsletter (Serving Blount, Cocke, and Sevier Counties). Volume XIII, No. 1 (Spring, 1987) was the article "The Lawson Family" by Elmer E. Mize, Pages 10-11.

William Lawson, son of Bartlet, was born about 1755, probably in Bedford County, Va. He married Sarah Hinton, daughter of William Robert Hinton about 1778, probably in Pittsylvania County, Va. The Lawsons lived in Henry County before moving into Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1782, where they lived for 17 years.

In 1806, William sold land in Buncombe County, N.C. He died about 1811 in Hawkins County. His widow Sarah moved to Monroe County, Tennessee, with some of her children. She died in Monroe County in 1826 at the age of 68. Twelve children were born to this pioneer couple. Family records indicate William was a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. The children were Thomas, William, Isham, Anna, Mary, Elijah, Stephen, Elisha, George, Preston, Hinton and Wiley.
