Löwenfeld literally means "lion's field" -- but because the lion was an animal symbolizing Judah, and Judah came to symbolize "Jewish" there are numerous Ashkenazy names containing the word Löwen. In addition, due to the similarity of sound, the German Löwe (lion) or Löwi could also be employed as a "cover" for the Jewish name (from the tribe name) Levi or Levy.
