Biographical account [written by direct descendant, Robert Hanscom -- 11 May 2015]

Benjamin Carle was born in Dover, New Hampshire on 15 August 1725 but moved with his parents to Scarborough, Maine when he was about one year old. He was baptized into the Scarborough church on 28 January 1742. He became a ship carpenter by occupation, and was also a farmer. About 1758, Benjamin and his wife, Sarah, moved from Scarborough to Pepperellborough (Saco), Maine where his father owned some land. In Saco, he owned a homestead farm on 60 acres of land, and had partial ownership shares in a saw mill and a grist mill.

In 1771, 1776, and 1789, Benjamin and his brothers participated in real estate transactions involving property formerly owned by Samuel Carle Sr. Benjamin Carle died in Saco, Maine in August 1794 in his "70th year of age" [he was actually 69].

16/517. BENJAMIN CARL, of Pepperellborough. Letters of Administration (16.541). F2522. Letters of Administration of the estate of Benjamin Carl, late of Pepperellborough, husbandman, deceased intestate, who died in August last, granted at York, 10 Nov 1794, to Sarah Carl, widow, and Edward Bradbury, a husbandman, both of Pepperellborough, who gave bond for L300, with sure ties Humphrey Pike and George Hight.

Inventory of the estate of Benjamin Carl, late of Pepperellborough, husbandman, deceased, appraised 17 Nov 1794 by Jeremiah Hill, Benjamin Nason, and John Foss, at L243/16/0; val att, 21 Dec 1794, by the appraisers, and ext 10 Feb 1795 by Edward Bradbury, one of the administrators. Inventory included homestead farm of 60 acres, at L150, 1/12 of a saw mill private, and 1/4 of a grist mill, at L4.

Sarah Carl and Edward Bradbury's account, 18 Aug 1795, of administration of the estate of Benjamin Carl, deceased: costs and distributions [including widow's necessities] L112/8/3; inventory of personal estate L89/16/0; creditors L96/11/3; balance due administrator L15/6/2. Att & all, Sanford, 24 Aug 1795. Administrators request, Pepperellborough, 5 Jan 1795, all creditors to and from estate of Benjamin Carle to apply fir settlement.

Humphrey Pike, Samuel Knight, and Samuel Goold, all of York Co., a committee to assign dower to Sarah, widow of Benjamin Carl, late of Pepperellborough, husbandman, deceased intestate. Above committee divides estate in Pepperellborough, 15 Oct 1795: about 22 acres [described] on a country road in Pepperellborough with the W end of the house on the same; decreed, 11 Nov 1795.

Edward Bradbury's account, dated 28 June 1796, of administration of the estate of Benjamin Carl, late of Pepperellborough, deceased: costs and distributions $254.62; balance in accountant's hands $21.92; creditors L82/19/3 or $276.54 [including proceeds of mill struck off to Joseph Beadbury for L12]. Mentioned: vendue at Beadbury's Tavern and writing a deed for the grist mill to James Foss.

NOTE: Edward Bradbury was Benjamin Carle's son-in-law, the second husband of his daughter Eunice. Samuel Goold was his nephew, the son of his sister Anne (Carle) Goold. And James Foss was another nephew, the son of his sister Hannah (Carle) Foss.
