Millard County Pioneer Passes

Delta, Utah--Helen Mar Callister McCullough, pioneer, passed away at her

home in Delta, Friday morning.

She was born in a covered wagon while her parents were crossing the plains

in Winter Quarters, now known as Florence, Nebraska, on Sept. 25, 1847.

They lived in the Seventeenth Ward in Salt Lake City until 1861. Her father

was then called to Fillmore. She was married May 22, 1864 to Henry J. McCullough.

A wedding dance was held for them in the State House which was lighted

with candles.

While in Fillmore she was an active Relief Society worker.

In April, 1885, they moved to Coyote, now Antimony. She was active in Sunday

School work. Throughout the valley she was known as an angel of mercy for

the storm was never too great for her to travel in, nor was she ever too

busy to aid or go to nurse any one in need.

She continued her kind deeds and work after she moved to Delta in January

1908, as long as she was able to get around.

So far as is known Mrs. McCullough was the last of the '47 pioneers living

in Millard county.

Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Helen Mar Wilcox, and Mrs. Frances

Melissa Wilcox, Archer, Idaho; Mrs. Clarabelle Savage, Antimony; Levi H.

McCullough, Thomas Clark McCullough, and Mrs. Nell Watson, Delta; 39 grandchildren,

39 great grandchildren.

Surviving brothers and sisters are: Mrs. Kate Hatton, Mrs. Susan Lyman,

D. Porter Callister, and Russell K. Callister of Salt Lake City; John Callister,

and Walter Callister of Tooele; Mrs. Isabelle Webb of Draper; Mrs. Sarah

Pratt of Lyons, Ore.; Alma Callister, Orson Callister, Mrs. Juliette Carlston,

and Lida Callister of Blackfoot, Idaho; and Joseph Platt Callister of Delta.

Funeral services will be held in the Delta Second Ward Chapel at 1 P.M.

Sunday. The local unit of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers are helping

with the arrangements and will assist with the services.

Interment will be in the Fillmore cemetery, where Mr. McCullough and three

deceased children are buried.

Millard County's Pioneer of 1847 Passes Away

Helen Mar Callister McCullough, born September 26, 1846, at Far West, Nebraska,

and died June 13, 1930, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nell Watson,

in Delta.

Mrs. McCullough was the oldest pioneer in Millard County, and her death

marked the passing of the county's only pioneer of 1847.

Mrs. McCullough had been ill for the past several months, suffering from

ailments incident to old age.

She was the daughter of Thomas and Helen Mar Clark Callister, and was born

in a covered wagon, while her parents were crossing the plains.

She arrived in Fillmore when only a year old, and suffered all the privations

and hardships of the pioneers. Many are the stories she has told her grandchildren

at her knee, concerning her life here in the early days. In fact, this

good woman knew, as no person living in this state today knows, what it

was to go to bed hungry.

She was married on May 24, 1864 to Henry J. McCullough. To them ten children

were born, seven of whom survive their mother. Mr. McCullough preceded

her in death about fifteen years.

She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Helen Mar Wilcox, Mrs.

Melissa Wilcox, both of Archer, Idaho; Mrs. Alta Brunson, Fillmore; Mrs.

Clara Bell Savage, Antimony; Levi H. McCullough, T. Clark McCullough, and

Mrs. Nell Watson, all of Delta. Also the following brothers and sisters:

D. P. Callister, R. K. Callister, Mrs. Kate Hatton, and Mrs. Susan Lyman

all of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Isabelle Webb, Draper; Mrs. Sadie W. Pratt,

Lions, Oregon; and John W. Callister, Tooele; and the following half brothers

and sisters: Walter Callister, Tooele; Orson Callister, Alva Callister,

Juliette Carson and Lida, all of Blackfoot, Idaho, and Joseph P. Callister

of Delta.

Funeral services were held in Delta Sunday at 1 o'clock. The speakers were

President of Garfield Stake, President Leo Lyman, Bishop H. E. Maxfield,

and Bishop Anthony Stephenson. Ella Bassett read a sketch of the life of

Mrs. McCullough.
