Biography

James Bean is a member of Clan MacBean.

James Bean, son of John MacBean (MacBayne) and Margaret Lissen, was married three time. Among the sons of John MacBean, James has the largest family of descendants by far.

Circa 1692, James first married Anne Coleman. She bore him two children and died. Children of James and Anne were John Bean, born 1693 in Brentwood, N.H. and Edward Bean, born 1695 in Exeter, N.H.

On December 3, 1697, in Exeter, NH, James married Sarah Bradley (1693-1738), the daughter of Daniel and Mary (Williams) Bradley, of Haverhill, Massachusetts.

James joined Kingston Church On October 22, 1725, where his wife, Sarah was a member. Upon her death, the pastor of the church included some remarks about her in his official church records.

"She was a very devoted Christian, and a mother who served her family and God with all her heart. She suffered a long illness before her death, which was a time of sorrow to the entire community."

Children of James and Sarah were Benjamin Bean, born 1699, Margaret Bean, born 1702, Joseph Bean, born 1704, Jeremiah Bean, born 1707, Samuel Bean, born 1710, Catherine Bean, born 1714, and Rachel Bean, born 1716. All of these children were born in Kingston, N.H.

On November 2, 1738, James married Mary Prescott (Coleman) (Crosby), (1677-1740), of Kingston, the daughter of James and Mary (Boulter) Prescott. Mary had been twice widowed. Her first husband, Jabez Coleman and his son were killed on September 4, 1724 at Kingston. Her second husband, Thomas Crosby was also deceased before she married James Bean. There were no children from her marriage to James.

James Bean became a large landowner in Kingston. His holdings began with a plot of 30 acres he received as a grant from the town of Exeter, on February 21, 1698. He also had land deeded to him from his father. Old land records show that he owned several farms in that part of Exeter which later became Kingston.

According to Joseph S Bean, in Clan MacBean of North America, "James Bean was a rather small man, of slight build. He probably was several inches short of six feet tall, and was thin and wiry. He was a quiet man who talked only when required, but when he did he was listened to. Probably this trait came from early days as an Indian fighter and as a hunter and trapper. He served in the Indian Wars from the time he was a very young man until after the withdrawal of the Indians from New Hampshire after 1710."
