James Garfield Lageson, 85, Blanchardville, died Friday afternoon, October 20, 2000 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Green County to his parents, Edward and Helga (Berg) Lageson. He attended school in Blanchardville. After he finished his schooling he farmed with his father for awhile, and then worked in road construction until he entered the Army on April 15, 1941. He served in 511 days of combat with the 700th Ordinance LM Company, 45th Infantry Division during World War II. This included the Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, Home-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe battles and campaigns. He was with the first troupes to enter Dachow after it was liberated. He earned several medals and awards during the time of his service. He was honorably discharged in July of 1945 and returned home to Blanchardville. He worked for the county for sometime. He met his future wife, LaVonne Marshall, at the Blanchardville swimming pool, where she was a lifeguard. They were married on December 6, 1946 in the Blanchardville Lutheran Church. After he was married, he began his career in the fuel oil business by driving a delivery truck for DX Oil Company. He worked for several different oil companies until he and his wife started the Lageson Oil Company in the mid 1970's. Jim's brother-in-law, Harry Marshall worked with them for many years. They operated their own fuel oil and gasoline delivery routes and a gas station in Blanchardville. They also had a bulk fuel oil and gasoline plant and routes in Darlington. He retired and sold the business to Mark Ryser in the mid-1980's. During retirement he spent a lot of time with his grandsons. He also loved hunting, fishing and especially playing cards with the guys. After his wife LaVonne became ill, he spent many years helping to take care of her. Jim was a past member of the Blanchardville Business Men's Association, the Blanchardville Fire Department, was a past Blanchardville Village Board member, the Dobson-Johnson American Legion Post in Blanchardville, the Pecatonica VFW, Blanchardville Lutheran Church and the Blanchardville Rod & Gun Club.
