Origins

Reliable evidence establishes that John Beal of Hingham, Massachusetts was the son of Edward Beales and Martha (Stone) Beales of Wramplingham, Norfolk, England. Daniel Cushing's record of the settlers of Hingham, Massachusetts who came from Norfolk states that John came from "Old Hingham" with his wife, 5 sons and 3 daughters.[1][2] Baptismal and marriage records that have been found in old Hingham and Wymondham, Norfolk, England for a John Beales[3] are consistent with records that establish the names of the children of John Beal of Hingham, Massachusetts (e.g., John's will[4]%29 and the identity of his second wife (e.g., David Hobart's statement in his journal that John Beal was his uncle[5]) and thus confirm that they were the same person. There is a record in the Wramplingham, Norfolk parish register of the baptism on 8 May 1593 of a John Beales, the son of Edward Beales and his wife Martha.[6] The fact that Wramplingham is only 4 miles from Wymondham, the date of baptism is consistent with John's estimated date of birth based on the baptismal date of his first-born child (1619), and no other likely birth or baptismal records have been found, supports the proposition that that baptismal record relates to John Beales of Wymondam, Norfolk and, thus, John Beal of Hingham, Massachusetts.

That proposition is also supported by the 1657 will of John Beales Jr of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Charles Henry Pope's The Pioneers of Massachusetts contains the patently incorrect statement that John Beales Jr. of Cambridge, Massachusetts was the brother of this profile's John Beal.[7] In fact, as Pope noted, John Beales Jr's will refers to several children of this profile's John Beal as his cousins,[8][7] which indicates that John Beales Jr's father (whom his will identifies as Edmond Beales) and this profile's John Beal's were brothers. Wramplingham baptismal records show that Edward and Martha Beales also had a son named Edmond,[9] which further confirms the proposition that this profile's John Beal was the son of Edward and Martha Beales of Wramplingham.

Since John was baptized in Wramplingham, Norfolk on 8 May 1593, he was probably born shortly before that date. Since he was baptized in Wramplingham and his father Edward Beales was the Wramplingham parish rector,[9] John was no doubt born in Wramplingham.

From "John Beal of Hingham and one line of his descendants" found at http://www.archive.org/stream/johnbealofhingha1865shur#page/n3/mode...

JOHN BEAL, the progenitor of the large family bearing his name and dwelling In Hingham, Cohasset, Weymouth and Abington, came from the parish of Hingham In Forehoe hundred in the county of Norfolk, England, which is situated about fourteen miles west-southwest of Norwich, the shire town, and about ninety-eight north-east of London. He came in the vessel called the Diligent, of which John Martin was master, arriving at Boston on the tenth of August, 1638. Daniel Gushing, one of the early town clerks of Hingham, who also came to New England In the above named vessel, In a manuscript list of the early settlers of Hingham, which has fortunately been preserved, says of him, "John Beale, shoemaker, with his wife and 5 sons and 3 daughters and 2 servants, came from Old Hingham and settled In New Hingham."

Perhaps the Inducement that led Mr. Beal to select Hingham as a place of abode was, that his wife, Nazareth, was daughter of Edmund Hobart, and consequently sister of Rev. Peter Hobart, the first minister of that town, who had chosen that place for his labors a few years previous. The five sons and three daughters of Mr. Beal who were brought over from England were, Martha, Mary, Sarah, John, Nathaniel, Jeremiah, Joshua and Caleb. Two other children, Rebecca and Jacob, were born In America.

Not long after his settlement at Hingham he became a landholder, as may be Inferred from the following entry taken from the town's book of grants of land : — " Given unto John Beal for a house lot 6 acres of land butting upon the town street northward, and upon the common southward, bounded with the land of Jonas Austin eastward, and with the land of Thomas Hobart westward." The site of this homelot can be easily pointed out on the south side of the present South Street (which was the ancient Town Street), and west of Hersey Street, which was laid out through Mr. Austin's original lot. -

On the 13th of March succeeding his arrival, Mr. Beal was admitted to the freedom of the Massachusetts "Colony, taking the customary free-man's oath, which riie,flI4 ai tKe edaufe time.with* several of his fellow towns-men; and in 1649, in company with Nicholas Jacob, he represented the town of Hingham in the General Court of the Colony.

His wife Nazareth died on the 23d of September, 1658 ; and, on the 10th of the following March, he married Mary, the widow of his old friend Nicholas Jacob, who had died on the 5th of June, 1657. By this wife he had no children ; and she died on the 15th of May, 1681, as David Hobart, who continued his father's diary, has recorded the event, although the town record states that "Mary Beal, the wife of John Beal, Senior, died 15 of June, 1681."

Mr. Beal lived to a good old age ; for under date of 1 April, 1688, Judge Sewall noted in his diary, "Father Beal of Hingham dies, age 100," and David Hobart wrote under the same date, " My Uncle John Beal died suddenly."

All the sons of Mr. Beal married and had children, as did also all the daughters, except the youngest, Rebecca, who died unmarried.

Arrived in Boston, MA August 10, 1638 aboard the ship Diligent from Hingham, England.

Settled in Hingham, MA.

Married first to Nazareth Hobart, sister of Hingham minister Peter Hobart.

JOHN BEAL was born in England, probably in or near Wymondham, co. Norfolk; and died at Hingham, Massachusetts 1 April 1688. His death was noted by David Hobart, "my Uncle John Beal died suddenly": and by Judge Sewell, "Father Beal of Hingham dies, aet. 100 yrs." ("Hingham History," 2:53).

He married first, in Wymondham, co. Norfolk, England, FRANCES RIPPLY, a sister to William Ripley who also came to New England in 1638, probably in the same ship with the Beal family. William Ripley made a deed of gift to Nathaniel Beal. No relationship is given in the deed, but it seems practically certain that Nathaniel Beal (born supposedly in 1629) was the youngest son and child of Frances Ripley ("The American Genealogist," 13:262-4).

He married second, at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England, 13 July 1630, NAZARETH (HOBART) TURNER, widow of Robert Turner and daughter of Edmund and Margaret (Dewey) Hobart, baptized at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England, 7 June 1601; died in Hingham, Mass., 23 September 1658.

She married first, at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England, 9 November 1626, Robert Turner, who was buried there 7 April 1627 (TAG 13:263). Nazareth Hobart was the sister of Rev. Peter Hobart, minister to the settlers of Hingham, Massachusetts. For more information on the Hobart Family, see "History of Hingham" 2:334.

He married third, at Hingham, 10 March 1659, MARY (GILMAN) JACOB, daughter of Edward Gilman of Hingham, co. Norfolk, and widow of Nicholas Jacob. She died in Hingham, 15 June 1681. For more information on the Gilman family, see TAG 11:137-139.

John Beal was probably a first cousin to the John Beal,Jr. of Hingham whose will of 26 October 1657 mentions his father Edmund Beal and some of the children of John Beal senior who are called "cousins." The baptisms of six children of Edmund and Susan (Wright) Beales is recorded at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England. From the marriage dates of Edmund and John Beal Sr. it would appear that they were probably brothers (definitely not father and son as given by Charles Pope in "Pioneers of Massachusetts").

The following record concerning the arrival of John Beal and his family was made by Daniel Cushing the fourth town clerk of Hingham, Mass.: "1638 John Beal, shoemaker, with his wife and five sons and three daughters and two servants, came from Old Hingham and settled in New Hingham."

On 18 September 1638 John received a grant of land containing six acres on what is now South Street at or near the corner of Hersey Street. He was admitted a freeman in 1639 and in 1649 and 1659 was chosen to represent the town at the General Court of the Colony. In his will of 27 September 1687, John names his children (John is the eldest son) and grandchildren, giving legacies to each.

Children of John and Frances (Ripley) BEAL, born in England, with the exception of the two youngest (History of Hingham, 2:53):

  1. JOHN 2, bapt. at Wymondham, 1 Jan. 161[8]/19; d. young.

6. The book "John Beal, the centenarian, and descendants: John Beal, 1588-1688, lived fifty years in England and fifty years in America : fourteen generations, 1588-1956: also, other Beal families from England," by Bertha Bortle Beal Aldridge (Victor, New York : B.B.B. Aldridge, 1956), pp. 10-12:

"JOHN BEAL was born in Hingham, England, in 1588; died April first, 1688, Hingham, Massachusetts, 100 YEARS OLD (Sewell's Diary 1688), the progenitor of the large family, bearing his name, and dwelling in Hingham, Cohasset, Weymouth and Abington, Massachusetts.

He came from the parish of Hingham, in the County of Norfolk, England, which is situated about fourteen miles west of Norwich, the shire town, and about ninety-eight miles northeast of London.

He married, first, June 11, 1616, Frances Ripley, Wymondham, Norfolk, England.

He married second, July 13, or 17, about 1628, Nazareth Hobart, widow of Robert Turner, who died April 7, 1627. She was the daughter of Edmund and Margaret Dewey Hobart. Nazareth was bp. June 7, 1601, born 1600.

John Beal came to America on the vessel called the "Diligent" of which John Martin was master, arriving at Boston on the tenth of August, 1638.

Daniel Cushing, one of the early town clerks of Hingham, also came to New England on the "Diligent. " In one of his manuscripts, we find a list of the early settlers of Hingham.

"John Beal the centenarian and descendants"

According to Daniel Cushing's record, John Beal and his family immigrated from England in 1638 aboard the Diligent of Ipswich, John Martin master, as part of a group of 133 passengers from Hingham, Norfolk and nearby towns. The entry for John Beal's family states: "1638. John Beale, shoemaker, with his wife and 5 sons and 3 daughters and two servants, came from Old Hingham and settled at new Hingham.". According to Savage, the Diligent left Gravesend on April 26, 1638 and arrived at Boston on August 10, 1638, while according to Banks, the Diligent left Ipswich in June 1638 (perhaps after coming up from Gravesend?) and arrived at Boston on August 10, 1638.

Upon his arrival in Hingham, John was granted 6 acres of land in Hingham on what is now South Street near the corner of Hersey Street.. He was admitted as a freeman in 1639 and in 1649 and 1659 was chosen to represent Hingham at the General Assembly of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
