Death of Mr. John Rowe, J.P.
Mr. John Rowe, whose funeral took place on Saturday last (11th Oct), at the Frederickton Cemetery, was a native of Cornwall, England. For about thirty years he had been settled on the river, the principal part of the time being spent in farming.
For some ten or twelve years Mr. Rowe conducted a store business at Kinchela Creek, and more recently erecting an imposing structure, in which postal work and storekeeping was combined.
Owing to his kindly and generous disposition he had made a great number of friends, who assembled round his grave on Saturday. Until about nine months ago he had enjoyed fairly good health, and since that time he suffered considerably, his end resulting from a complication of diseases.
He was a member of the Good Templar Order, and a number of members of this order, wearing regalia, were present at the funeral. Owing to the great concourse of people who assembled to pay a last respect to the deceased, the funeral arrangements were considerably delayed, and after holding a part of the service at the, Kinchela Wesleyan Church, it was fully one o'clock when the two river steamers heavily laden, slowly approached the Frederickton wharf. Here, the mournful assembly was considerably augmented, and as the procession slowly moved forward it extended over a great distance toward the cemetery.
The service at the grave was rendered by the Rev. T. A. Hanton, being followed by that of the Templars.
The deceased was only 49 years of age, Mrs. Eggins being the only child.
