MRS. EDITH ROWE.

Having reached the grand old age of 85 years, there passed away in hospital at Kempsey on Tuesday last a most popular and highly respected resident of Gladstone in the person of Mrs. Edith Rowe, relict of the late Phillip Rowe, who predeceased her some six years ago.

Born at Lingston, London, deceased married the late Phillip Rowe at the Parish Church, Goole, Yorkshire. Shortly after their marriage the young couple set out for Australia in that true pioneering spirit which has stood the country in such good stead through out the years. On arrival here they proceeded up the coast and finally came to the Macleay, where the late Mr. Rowe took up farming land in the Gladstone area and met with outstanding success.

After the decease of her life's mate the late Mrs. Rowe went to reside with Mr. and Mrs. W. Wickham, of Gladstone, and lived there until several weeks ago, when she met with an accident and was admitted to hospital for treatment.

The deceased was a granddaughter of the Earl of De-la-Wa. There were no children of the marriage.

The funeral, under the conduct of Mr. Jos. T. Walker, took place on Wednesday last from the funeral parlour to the Frederickton Church of England cemetery, where Rev. Reid officiated at the graveside in the presence of an assemblage of friends of the deceased.

GOLDEN WEDDING,

Mr. and Mrs. Philip Rowe Honoured.

On 25th December last a very pleasant gathering took place at the Gladstone Hotel, Gladstone, to do honour to a pair of well known townspeople, Mr. and Mrs. Philip Rowe.

The reason for the gathering was that Mr. and Mrs. Rowe, old and respected residents of Gladstone, were celebrating the 50th anniversary of their wedding.

(snip)

Mrs. Rowe was born at Kensington, London, and Mr. Rowe hails from Cornwall. They were married in Yorkshire in 1883. After arriving in Sydney they made their way to the Macleay River, arriving here on Anniversary Day, 1887. Since then they have resided at Kinchela and Gladstone, where Mr. Rowe carried on successfully as a dairy farmer.

Mrs. Rowe is a clever artiste and painter, as many of her old pupils round about the river will testify.

We wish the old-timers still many pleasant years of happiness together, and that the eventide of their lives may be full of rich content.
