Death of Mr Thomas Rowe.
A gloom was cast over the neighbourhood of Kinchela, on Thursday afternoon, when it became known that Mr Thomas Rowe had suddenly passed away, whilst sitting in his chair.
For some time Mr Rowe had been under the care of Dr Casement, but no immediate danger was anticipated by the family. At the time of his death most of the family happened to be absent. During dinner he complained of feeling unwell, and Miss Rowe at once applied the usual remedies to relieve him, and apparently with the usual success. On being asked if he felt better, he replied that he did, but felt a little cold. After applying warm flannels, his daughter discovered that he had passed away.
Mr Rowe was one of the best known and respected residents of the Lower Macleay. He was well known as a generous, upright man.
He was a native of Cornwall, England, and came to the river at the age of 19, in company with his brother, the late John Rowe, and had resided at Kinchela ever since. He married Miss Harriett Sanders, daughter of Mr William Sanders, of Kinchela.
After fulfilling the conditions on a selection he took a position in the dredge service, remaining there for about 12 years, when he again returned to his farm. Soon after, Mr Rowe met with a severe accident which resulted in the loss of his right hand, which was blown from his wrist by a charge of dynamite. This severe accident nearly cost him his life, and the shock, from which he never recovered, seemed to hasten his sudden end.
Mr. Rowe took a lively interest in the temperance cause at Kinchela, and was one of those through whose instrumentality the Temperance Hall at Kinchela was erected. He was trustee of the Methodist Church, Kinchela, and had always been an active worker in church matters.
Mr Rowe has left a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn their loss, and Mrs. Rowe has the sympathy of all who know her.
The sorrowing family are composed of five sons, T. J., H W, Harry, Albert and John, and four daughters, Mary, Mrs G. Cheers (Alice), Rose and Lily. Two daughters have predeceased him (Francis 1884; Evelyn 1896)
A large number of friends and relatives attended the funeral on Saturday. The remains were conveyed from his late residence to the Frederickton Methodist Church, where a very impressive service was con ducted by the Rev. Mr Young, assisted by Mr. Alison, thence to the grave in the Frederickton cemetery.
