Obituary:
Kathleen S. Balch, age 91, passed away May 4, 2013.
Mrs. Balch grew up along with six brothers and a sister on a farm in Ackley, Iowa. She served for three years during WWII in the Navy as a RN. One interesting duty was being a special duty nurse in the White House to President Roosevelt's grandson.
Mrs. Balch raised five children during her husband's 30 year naval career. After retiring in Annapolis Maryland, she and her husband sailed over 25,000 miles in their sloop, Lanikai. She was an avid gardener and developed an extensive Balch genealogy. Active in her church and community, she was a giving and gracious person who was always ready to help. In her final years, she lived at the The Fairfax - Senior Living Community and then with her family in Stafford.
Mrs. Balch's family and many friends will miss her sweet, unselfish spirit. Survivors include her five children: Molly (John) Nagoski of Stafford, Virginia; Daniel (Bonnie) Balch of Green Bay, Wisconsin; Michael (Rhonda) Balch of Des Moines, Iowa; Matthew (Adriana) Balch of Miami Beach, Florida and Laura (David) Fahey of Charlotte, North Carolina. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mrs. Balch was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Capt. Richard Balch.
Mrs. Balch will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
