"Kelly, John Frederick, 1869-1901 (aka John Bell Kelly) Born in the sub-district of Cloonbur No. 1, at Oughterard in County Galway, Ireland on 28 December 1869. John immigrated to Australia in around 1885 and was working in the farming district of Salisbury West as a butcher. He also worked as a cable-car operator before being appointed a constable in the Victoria Police Force. John served with the 2nd Scottish Horse Regiment during the South African conflict (Boer War 1899-1902) and was killed during the Battle of Bakenlaagte whilst protecting ‘Gun Hill’ on 30 October 1891. The Inglewood Advertiser wrote “We have been informed that Lieutenant Kelly, recently reported as having been killed in South Africa, was formerly a much-respected resident of this district and at one time a member of the local section of Rangers. For a considerable time, he was in the employ of Mr. F. M. Penny of Salisbury West, by whom he was held in high esteem.” John was buried at Germinston (Primrose) in South Africa and is remembered on the Ballarat Boer War Memorial."
