About Nrs. Sarah Jane Kelly
"Kelly, Sarah Jane, 1867-1947 Born in the sub-district of Cloonbur No. 1, at Oughterard in County Galway, Ireland on 29 March 1867. Sarah was aged 22 when she arrived in Australia on 6 October 1891 with her mother and three siblings on board the Royal Mail Steamship Oroya. Sarah worked as a nurse, the Electoral Rolls of 1903, 1909, 1912, 1913, 1914 and 1919 placing her at 1109 Hoddle Street in East Melbourne. In 1914 her sister Alicia is recorded at the same address. By 1923 Sarah had moved to 90 Hotham Street in East Melbourne and then to 72 Hotham Street as shown on the 1931, 1936, 1937 and 1943 Electoral Rolls. 72 Hotham Street is a four-story red brick house that was built in 1886-1887 and was initially The East Melbourne Trained Nurses’ Home but by 1890 a private hospital. By the late 1920s number 72 was known as Rubra Flats. Sarah died in Melbourne Hospital on 9 September 1947 and was buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery in the suburb of Carlton North."
