About Richard Kelly
"Bridget Jane Bell was born at Wicklow in Ireland in 1839. Her youngest child was five years old when her husband died in 1879. Bridget was 50 years old when she and four of her children immigrated to Australia on board the Oroya and it seems she buried five of her 10 children before she died in 1923. A son was killed while serving in the South African conflict, another was wounded during the First World War and her daughter was awarded the Military Medal for bravery. "Kelly, Richard, 1836-1879 Born on the Powerscourt Estate in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, Ireland in 1836. Richard married Bridget Jane Bell (1839-1923) at Calary Upper in Kilmacanogue, County Wicklow on 8 April 1858. Richard was Caretaker on the Powerscourt Estate then a farmer and Head Gamekeeper to Lord Ardilaun on his Ashford Estate near the village of Cong on the Mayo-Galway border in Ireland. Richard died at the age of 43 at Ballinrobe in County Mayo on 23 March 1879 of Bright’s Disease (kidney disease). His widow and most of his children would later emigrate to Australia and New Zealand."
