About Peter Edwin De Vries

Funeral services for Peter E. De Vries, longtime member of the Sioux county board of supervisors and former chairman of the board were held Saturday at the First Reformed church in Sioux Center with the Rev. Harry Brower officiating.

Mr. De Vries died last Tuesday at the Sioux Center hospital after a short illness. He was a member of the Sioux Center community for many years. Upon his retirement from the board of supervisors effective Jan. 1 of this year, Mr. De Vries was presented a plaque for his 30 years of service on the board. Up until his death, however, he remained active in county work and was a member of the county welfare board. He had served as chairman of the welfare board since Oct. 1939.

He was born December 20, 1891 (sic!) in The Netherlands. Arriving in the United States as a young man, he began farming near Sioux Center until becoming active with the board of supervisors about 30 years ago. He married Johanna Kleinwolterink February 4, 1904.

He was first elected as county supervisor for the third district of Sioux county in 1930 for a term of office which began Jan. 1, 1932. On Oct. 27, 1959, he became chairman of the board, replacing C. H. Sedgwick, who died in office that year.

Survivors include the widow; seven daughters, Mrs. John De Beer of Alton, Mrs. William Huisman and Mrs. Clarence Jonker, both of Orange City, Mrs. Ed De Groot of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Dick Fallow of Davenport and Mrs. Henry Westra and Mrs. Marvin Van Muyden, both of Sioux Center; four sons, John of Minneapolis, Minn., Bert of Denver, Herman of Maurice and Peter jr., of Marysville, Kan.; 31 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
